The prospective puppy buyer (PPB) filled out our puppy application in which one of the questions is if the applicant is interested in showing or breeding the dog.
The PPB clearly indicated in writing that she wanted the dog only as a family...

pet companion and had no intention of showing or breeding the dog.
In order for us to hold the reservation, the PPB paid the required deposit of $ 500.00 and the $ 16.00 transaction fee for deposits paid through PayPal. Prior to paying the deposit, the PPB received our deposit and payment policy in writing.
After the PPB received our puppy package with the contract for a female puppy to be registered under the AKC (American Kennel Club) limited registration which is our standard registration option for non-breeding family pet companions, males and females (this precludes the AKC registration of any offspring of dogs registered under the limited registration),she then stated in writing that her husband wanted to get a male so that they could eventually breed this female and that she wanted the dog on the full AKC registration so that its offspring could be registered with the AKC.
We then informed the PPB in writing that because in her application, she withheld her intention of wanting to purchase a dog for breeding and not just as a family companion, we were unable to place a puppy with her and therefore had to cancel the reservation. We also informed her that we already had found another home for the puppy we had reserved for her.

We further informed her in writing that we would reimburse her deposit in full subject to her returning the puppy folder in condition acceptable to us.
Despite several reminders, the PPB did not return the folder and instead threatened us with legal actions.
After our last deadline for receiving the folder passed without result, we informed the PPB in writing that we would reimburse the deposit and the PayPal transaction fee but would withhold $ 50.00 for the non returned folder and for the expenses of putting together and mailing a new folder to another PPB. We also stated that we would reimburse an additional $ 25.00 if the folder were to be returned in acceptable condition after she had received the initial refund of $ 466.00.
The PPB did not respond to our explanation regarding the deposit refund nor did she return the folder and we therefore proceeded with reimbursing $ 466.00 of her original deposit of $ 500.00 and the PayPal transaction fee of $ 16.00 on 1/14/17.
Because we are selling living beings and not inanimate objects such as toasters or washing machines, we endeavor to screen our puppy buyers as carefully as possible. We do want to know why a PPB wants one of our puppies and what he/she/they intend to do with it. Had this particular PPB been upfront with us and had let us know from the onset on that they wanted the puppy for breeding purposes and not just as a family pet companion, we would have proceeded entirely differently and because of other relevant information provided by her, most likely, we would have declined to place a puppy with her and the deposit refund issue of this complaint would have never arisen.
