Thursday, 30 June 2015Dear
[redacted]:We are
responding to Complaint #[redacted] dated 26 June 2015.Our
records indicate that on 3/30/15 the customer brought his bike in to have a
diagnostic performed because the check engine light was on. The technician also
replaced a burned out left font bulb...

and the work order indicates the correct
part number replacement bulb was installed. On
6/15115 the customer brought his bike in because his rear tire was flat and
requested that we install a sheath over some wiring that was left exposed by
the aftermarket shop that installed his aftermarket handlebars. The aftermarket
handlebars were installed by a local aftermarket shop which is not recognized
as a ucertifieds repair facility by Harley Davidson Motor Company as they are
not an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer. Our certified technician replaced the
torn rear inner tube, and installed sheathing on the exposed wires, and cable
tied the wires so they would not be damaged by the forks when turning.
Installing "zip ties" to hold wiring harnesses in place is common on
Harley Davidson motorcycles. They are utilized in several different locations
during the assembly of new motorcycles at the factory. The wires that were
covered and secured by the technician supply power to the front turn signals and do not connect to either handlebar
switch assembly.After
picking the bike up 6/16/15 the customer returned on [redacted] stating that the
left handlebar switch assembly was inoperative. Our technician connected the
bike to the Digital Technician diagnostic computer and retrieved trouble codes
for loss of communication to the left handlebar switch assembly. The wires to
both handlebar switch assemblies were modified (extended) by the aftermarket
shop that installed the aftermarket handlebars and one of the crimped
connections had failed causing a loss of communication to the left switch
assembly.The customer authorized
repairs of the failed connection as well as removal of all the crimp
connections in the left and right handlebar connections so the wires could be
soldered which is the recommended method of wire connection, and the one used
by Corpus Christi Harley-Davidson.This repair is not covered
by the Harley Davidson 2 year limited warranty as the failure was caused by a
modification made to the motorcycles original equipment handlebars. The following is an excerpt
from the Harley Davidson limited warranty statement that is in the owner's
manual for every new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Bullets 4 and 5 refer to
modifications made to the motorcycle and their implications on the warranty. This warranty does not cover: Parts and labor for normal maintenance as recommended in the Owner's Manual, or the replacement of parts due to normal wear and tear Including, but not limited to, the following: tires, lubrication, oil and filter change, fuel system cleaning, battery maintenance, engine tune-up, spark plugs, brake, clutch, chain/belt adjustments and chain replacement. Cosmetic concerns that arise as a result of owner abuse, lack of proper maintenance or environmental conditions (except concerns that result from defects in factory materials or workmanship, which are covered by this limited warranty period).Any cosmetic condition existing at the time of retail delivery that has not been documented by the authorized Harley-Davidson selling dealer prior to retail delivery. Defects or damage to the motorcycle caused by alterations outside of Harley-Davidson® factory specifications or caused by alterations or use of parts or accessories not approved for the make and model year of your motorcycle. Damage caused by Installation or use of non-Harley-Davidson components, even those installed by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership that causes a Harley-Davidson part to fall. Examples include, but are not limited to performance-enhancing powertrain components or software, exhaust systems, non-approved tires, lowering kits, tow packages, certain flag mounts, handlebars, add-ons connected to the factory electrical system, and so on.Dn 6/27/15 the work was completed on the bike
and the customer picked the bike up 6/29/15. The customer was provided ail of
the sections of wire with the crimp
connections that were removed and it was demonstrated with a digital multimeter
that one of the connections had no electrical continuity, thus causing an open
circuit. All of the concerns expressed in this
complaint were addressed and the customer was appreciative that we were able to
repair his issues and address the rest of the wiring to prevent any failures in
the future. I am also enclosing copies of all three of the signed repair orders
authorizing the repairs. Two repairs were done under Harley-Davidson's factory
warranty at no charge one to replace the
front left turn signal bulb and not the right rear turn signal as he stated and
replace the battery. The second repair order repaired a short in a wire in the
rear turn signal. The other repair order indicates he was charged $142.50 plus tax for the work that was done to
correct the electrical issues not
$300 as he is claiming, All Non-Warranty repairs that were completed were done with the customer's approval.[redacted]
