balancing and valve stem maintenance. We also explained that standard size used tire installation is 12.50 per tire for mounting, balancing. Stem maintenance is not included with used tires unless requested by customer. Extra dismounts are $2.50 ea. We saw when the customers son came in and we checked in his car the tires he wanted installed were used, so the price would have been $12.50 x4 plus the 4 extra dismounts $2.50 x4 totaling $60.00. At no time did we tell him his used tires would be $20.00 for every tire touched. We are 100% consistent with this pricing and do not vary. They may have misunderstood the pricing in their telephone calls to us. If that is the case, I am very sorry. After the car was checked in and brought into the shop we discovered he had a different size then what was on his car. They were visually much larger than the tires that were being removed. We stopped work on the car and checked the sizing and found the tires that the customer wanted to put onto his car were not the manufacturer recommended size. The tires that were on the car at that time were P185/60R14 and that is the manufacturer recommended size. I enclosed a screen shot of my computer generated size lookup for that car. It is our policy to follow the manufacturer's recommendation and industry acceptable alternatives when installing tires on cars. We can't be liable for changes made to a vehicle that can change the way a car handles or get traction. Even at the customer's request. There have been law suites in the past that have addressed this exact situation. I agree there are alternative sizes for that car. The tires the customer wanted put onto the car were a P195/70R14 which are 2" taller than the tires currently on the car. We felt they were too big for the car. I enclosed another screen shot of my tire calculator that tells us acceptable alternative sizes. The P195/70R14 is just too big and could rub or cause other issues. We called the customers son and told him that the tires were too big and that we follow the manufacturer's recommendation and alternatives when Installing tires on cars and the P195/70R14 he wanted Installed did not fit the criteria. The customer's son came and picked up the car and we voided the invoice. If the customer has the correct replacement size for the car I would be happy to install them at my current installation pricing listed above.
