Poor workmanship, lack of communication, unfinished, Additional billing after paid in full

The quality and craftmanship was extremely poor. Door knob was on backwards. We had dual sinks installed in our bathroom and the hot and cold were different on each sink. The hallway paint was scuffed, drilled an unnecessary hole through hallway wall then patched said hole and chipped away the paint in multiple locations without even telling us or offering to fix. There was never a complete walk through done by the contractor hired. We were charged a very large sum of money for the tub and surround and weren't aware the surround was just "stick on". We could have very well purchased a "stick on" tub surround at any box store for $200. Missing caulk, unfinished areas (see attached pictures), many areas not sanded down (see attached pictures) and ceiling vent not properly sealed to the ceiling. New greenboard was installed on ceiling and within one month the ceiling now has water stains or mildew. Professionalism extremely lacking and time frame was completely inaccurate.

Desired Outcome

Refund We would not like his company to return to our home. We would ultimatly like a partial refund, however are main concern is that other people do not get taken advantage of like so many already.

Bublick Construction Response • Feb 26, 2020

This job began very typically, with many meetings with the customer & open communication necessary to agree upon the anticipated scope of work There were repeated chnages to the proposal, which is very typical for any remodel. Generally we get to "version 5" of the proposal before any work is actually done. We had performed a bathroom remodel for this customer before without issue and had a relationship back to highschool.

After many different "options" of work were quoted, the customer agreed to a scope where they would complete all painting and also agreed on the proposal to budgeted items that had not be selected yet, such as flooring & a $500 "allowance" for typical a bath tub. The customer was asked to identify a tub locally(box store) and the contractor would get their chosen tub & install it at the proper time,

On October 21, 2019, the customer was contacted to select a "start demo" date and the contractor requested the 23rd. On this text, the contractor reminded the customer that we still did not have flooring selected and we needed a tub selection too. During this conversation, the customer stated that they had decided to go with a larger tub that would need to be special ordered from a local supply house. The lead time from supplier was 2-4 weeks. Not unusual for a special order. The customer was briefed on the lead time and a new "tentative" start date was agreed upon for 19 Nov, 2019. NOTE: This new tub cost $1,543. The customer was briefed it would be $1,600 and put us over budget, They agreed to this additional cost via email. That's a mere $67 mark-up. Obvious the contractor was not interested in a money making job, but rather was working for a friend and trying to save cost. Invoice available if requested.

Demo started and he tub eventually arrived a little over 4 weeks on 20 November. Prior to arrival, all plumbing in the bathroom had to be updated as it was old and antiquated. The customer asked how much that would add and the contractor informed them there would be no upcharge. Again, very uncommon for a contractor to complete for free. Contractor even added in line shut offs for shower at no charge to customer. Customer was notified we were trying our best to keep cost down as they were too! At this time, customer notified contractor they were unsure if they liked tub or not. Contractor stopped work to discuss with them and it was decided it would "grow" on them, per text conversation. Work would continue, along with open dialogue with customer.

As work progressed, the customer would add such items as a new door to the bathroom & moving a light switch by the door that the husband said "should be pretty easy." I can submit photos of the "easy move" showing how involved it actually was with much interference with studs & plaster. There was minimal charge for switch move. At this time, customer was still assumed to do the painting for the project. When the time came to paint, they asked contractor to do it, but insisted we use the customers paint to help keep cost down. This was against the better judgement of contractor and was discussed with customer. Customer pushed to use old materials and contractor was even asked to absorb painting cost as customer was already over budget. Contractor painted bathroom at an extreme discounted rate. Then the customer asked contractor to paint door for free as well. Contractor agreed because at this point, it was made clear by the customer they were completely unhappy with THIER choice in tub. The job would now become a fight by the customer to "cut corners" in an effort to save more at any angle. Door & trim were painted without charge.

The customer has made several complaints that can now be addressed:

1. Missing caulk on countertop--This is true. We missed a 3cm line of caulk on the left hand side of the vanity top. I was notified of this during a FB post by a third party.

2. Hot & cold water lines reversed--This is true. It was identified to us and corrected immediately. Faucets were a "well" design and a mistake in hooking up the water line was made. Not a big issue and was corrected right away.

3. Paint chipped in hallway--true, but we disagree with cause. Additional paint was completed to owners satisfaction and this item was not identified during FOUR different visits by painters. A walk through was completed with painters twice. Spots on floor seen in pictures were there previous to job starting. Paint missing on door frame was acknowledged by husband in person and he said "that's not a big deal, ill take care of it." He knows we had already "donated" an immense amount of labor & material to their job.

4. Contractor never completed final walk through--false. Contractor was available on job everyday work was being performed and multiple days after. Open communication was kept with husband and wife and husband was often home for lunch and would get a brief "summary" of work that day. Contractor had appointment to conduct a walk through with customer and customer had to cancel for personal reasons. Customer failed to re-schedule but communication continued while we were trouble shooting paint issues. Wife was contacted on 18 Dec and never responded. Husband had been exchanging cordial texts with contractor up until wife decided to "vent" on Facebook before bringing issues to contractors attention.

5. Paint spots on ceiling--true. This happened when customer forced us to use their unservicable paint. Contractor should have pushed harder to use new products but we had already absorbed more cost on this job than is realistic on any job. Issues were caused from steam in the bathroom causing discoloration in old, expired paint. Has nothing to do with craftsmanship. Has everything to do with being forced to use inadequate materials.

6. Door knob on backwards--true. Knob was put on initially and removed to paint door(for free). When painter re-installed knob, it was backwards. Two screws and two minutes later, it was fixed. Not really an issue after all.

7. Customer was in control of what they were charged. All expenses were briefed to them continuously and updates were given as necessary. They decided to take themselves over budget and now have regrets.

8. Some pictures do not even pertain to our work area or scope of work we were paid for. We are not responsible for areas that were not discussed and thus, not fixed. IE--drywall areas that were never asked to repair are now being listed as our poor craftsmanship? Its dishonest and unfortunate.

Facts and bottom line: Every job has its challenges. This is the nature of the business and we respond to these challenges very well, thus we have many, many satisfied customers throughput the area. To include neighbors near this customer that we continue to do work for. Fact: we do very good work, thus this customer had us back to do their second bathroom after we did their first. We must have done something right the first time. Fact: There was never a "punch list" provided to the contractor for any of the issues listed on this complaint. Attempts to contact the wife were not returned. Discussion with the husband was ongoing. The wife then chose to air her grievance on facebook as opposed to request anything be fixed. Half the items on this complaint were fixed immediately anyways so the complaint carries even less merit. The wife then added additional info to facebook and still never asked the contractor to correct anything. When the contractor reached out to the customer, the only "remedy" they wanted was money. They didn't want anything actually fixed, they wanted money.

Its unfortunate this job ended like this and the attempted slander campaign on social media had to happen. I pride myself on having a very good, honest, veteran owned business.every job has its issues but we always rise to the occasion. In this case, once the customer declared that "we hate the tub," I don't believe there was any salvaging the situation. We did our best to jump through hoops for them and save them money but it just would not have been enough. They wanted more than their budget would allow and somebody has to take the blame. Very unfortunate.

Customer Response • Mar 05, 2020

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
While there is way more to the story, I will address his bullet points for you to decide on how to proceed. The time frame of which he references is not completely accurate. We discussed the "soaker tub" in person and very early on we feel he dropped the ball on ordering said tub in a timely fashion.

1) Missing caulk was easily avoidable had *** been present along with with having an eye for detail. Especially considering the wall to vanity area was not completed, or caulked, at ALL. It was brought to their (Bublick Construction) attention and THEY STILL MISSED DOING IT PROPERLY. This was prior to any social media post.2) Being that the faucets were bought "off the shelf" at Lowe's with hot/ cold lines we are still baffled how a licensed professional managed to do it correctly on one sink but not the other. Not to mention our toddler who is learning which sides are hot and cold could have easily been scalded. Again, customer need to point this out like everything else. When we did we were reprimanded for not knowing it sooner, as if it were our fault. We were also not told that when the water lines were switched, water left from the lines fell on towels below, making them more than just damp.3) If you look at the pictures that were provided, the trim THEY painted, and lack thereof, which matches the exact dimensions and paint splatter that is now on the hardwood floors. Also, all the hallway paint that was removed and scratched was never even mentioned to us along with all the areas dinged up the walls. The paint cost us $30 to get the exact color match at Sherwin Williams to complete touching up their mistakes. As far as donate, we have proof we were charged $225 for paint and a total of $780 for "over charged items", I can provide this estimate.4) Contractor never completed final walk through, although texted husband the painter should have provided a complete walk through. Can provide this discussion. Why would a painter do a complete walk through. According to Bublick Construction sites, *** is listed as the only employee. Therefor the only person that should have provided the walk through. We were also asked we leave final payment in the bathroom the day they "finished". That final payment was cashed 12/23/2019. He did ask to try and remedy the situation in January, but wasn't until we posted on social media WHICH HIS COMPANY NOR ANYONE WAS NAMED BY NAME. Again, he tried to remedy the situation weeks after he cashed the final payment. At that time the husband and *** had set up a time to discuss, unfortunately the husbands grandfather passed. When we tried to reschedule is when *** started putting us at fault, like we supplied old paint and things that are wrong were not done by him. At that time we had had enough. Which has lead us here. The contractor, nor his subcontractors, were here daily let alone worked any full days. If the Revdex.com would like us to provide proof we can call RING (our doorbell camera) for the records as we watched them show up and leave, usually working about 4.5 hours per day and *** rarely being present. AS for me not responding I felt I was being talked down too by him because I am a women and nothing was his fault along with telling me I "needed to be more reasonable". All documented in text that we can provide. We started really questioning his ability, the people he hired and if they were/ are licensed professionals. With things such as the faucet lines installed incorrectly, door handle on wrong and exhaust fan was "something that belongs in a spaceship" which was also bought off the shelf at Lowes was and is very concerning.5) Inadequate Materials? Forced? We have two different quotes from *** stating "customer is to provide own paint". One of these quotes was sent on 11/13 .We purchased the paint at Lowe's ( again we provide proof of purchase). Paint was Rust-oleum Lot #S99132 and their phone number is ***. I called and spoke with *** and she stated this paint was manufactured on 9/13/2019 and has a 5 year shelf life. She stated anyone can call to confirm. Again, we were charged $225 for paint in which we were guaranteed a 2 coat minimum. We don't believe that happened on the ceiling nor the walls. The old paint is bleeding through new paint, which wouldn't be an issue had 2 coats been completed. We can also provide the receipt for the wall paint that was bought at Lowe's and is Sherwin Williams.6) Nothing was done for free and the quotes can show all amounts along with the 12/18 invoice stating $225 for paint along with an additional $780 in "over budget" items. Again I can provide. The door knob was fixed BECAUSE WE FIXED IT.7) We have absolutely no regret if the work was quality. None of this was quality. Before we pursued going to the Revdex.com and possibly getting an attorney we hired a third party contractor who very much agreed the work was sub-par and that we were extremely over charged for the work and materials that were provided. We were never provided or told the tub/ surround we paid $1600 for would be a stick on surround you could purchase at any box store for $200. We also have a different assumption of what was considered a soaker tub. We were never given a list of "styles". We will take responsibility as we should have asked more questions in regards to styles or what he was ordering. The caulk that sealed the surround to tub was trim caulk, which was left behind and we still have. Husband had to completely remove all caulk and replace with actual Tub and Tile caulk. We are fairly easy going people but this was hard earned money we spent hoping for quality. Over the last 6 months we have worked with ***, ***, *** and *** ALL without issue. If the Revdex.com would like to contact any of these vendors we would be happy to sign any sort of release for you to contact on our behalf. 8) We also asked on 2 different occasion (8/30 9:03 by email and by text on 11/15 at 2:42) if the bathroom would be gutted down to the studs. He only responded once to one of the same question hence we needed to ask again, but responded with "gutting to studs as necessary". As you can see in the pictures by the light switch the drywall, in our eyes, should have been replaced or at the very least sanded down to match the current finish. Again. fast sub par work. Every day more issues come to light. Areas were they replaced drywall has a smooth texture, when ALL walls have a light texture finish. Can also send pictures. Just an awful cheap work.
Facts and Bottom line: We were asked for a $5000 deposit and the remainder at completion. On 12/6/2019 we should have never been asked for an additional $1000 of payment in the middle of construction, We should have refused but in good faith wrote another check. I can provide bank statement. We should have never paid the final payment until a complete walk through was completed but we trusted things would be made right. Job was quoted 5 days, which we knew was unrealistic, but we did not expect this to take over 5 weeks. Had full days been worked I believe this could have been avoided. No punch list given, true, but was never asked. He should have been able to point out the most obvious issues if he were here like he states he was. He mentions social media slander, how? Since he cannot see my posts he was given information third party. I can supply all posts as it clearly states I WILL NOT MENTION THE PERSON OR COMPANY. However, people knew. I was amazed at pictures and stories I was told of work has he has provided others. Further more, he finally asked what would remedy the situation, and we stated a partial refund. He immediately declined a refund. He declined without even asking what that refund amount could be? Could have this been resolved for $500? Possibly, but he will never know since he never bothered to discuss. Other items not mentioned were the fact he was asked to NOT to give out garage code. We came home one evening to opening the garage with a random man standing in it. It was the painter in which were NOT notified, of anyone being at our house after hours, nor did we know him . We have a toddler to protect, my mother in law was also in town and this was very concerning considering we were coming home from a medical procedure. Another point of *** NOT being here, lack of communication along with giving our garage code out to complete strangers. If *** were here, more than just to collect his check, and looked over everything he would have noticed how scratched up the linen closet paint was, how they NEVER cleaned out the saw dust left in the drawers and how they left a Mountain Dew can/ Coffee Cup with old coffee in it/ box of latex gloves/ left over tubs of caulk and other garbage in the linen closet this clearly could have all been taken care of. This is so disappointing and will supply Revdex.com with any documents needed.

Bublick Construction Response • Mar 19, 2020

I will no-longer rebut this customers claims. This has switched from a complaint about quality of work to a personal attack.

I cannot defend rumors of what other unnamed people have said about my company. I WILL NOT spend time defending how I talk to female customers, or talk down to them. The ridiculousness of this claim should be felt by the customer every time they pull out of their driveway and look across the street to their neighbors house where we have completed an ENORMOUS amount of work and continue to do so. For a widow and her live in daughter no less, both being woman I should point out.

I have rebutted the original claims and yet more
and more seem to appear. Amazing. The original claims were rebutted professionally and the disgruntled customer came up with more issues and has conducted themselves in a very unprofessional manner. I do not see the need nor have the desire to address them at their level.

The fact remains; we completed work for this customer in the past and they re-hired us to do more work. Seems odd if everything they are saying is true & accurate.

Fact: We have maintained an A+ rating with the Revdex.com for a long, long time and will continue to do so. This will be our first complaint. Not this week. Not this month. Not this year. FIRST. It would appear we are doing something right, and my current customer base would agree.

They say "the first casualty of war is the truth." The customer desires a war and I will not entertain. Their claims are skewed and lacking integrity.

If the customer continues to attack me personally or seeks to do further harm to my company, I will turn this over to my legal team for action.

I'm sure they will take the last shot in this argument and that must be expected, considering the way they've chosen to handle themselves. I will no longer participate. Too many other things need my attention at this time and arguing with known dishonest people is not one of them.

Its unfortunate they did not want to communicate professionally and chose to slander us on social media That's not how professional people conduct themselves.

I wish them and their new baby(on the way) well and wish this had turned out differently.

I hope the Revdex.com recognizes this has become a personal attack and lacks any possibility for logical rebuttal. Thanks you!

I guess my first review did not go through so I'll try again as their work was really good and they deserve the good report.
Bublick Construction installed a new patio, sidewalk, and back door cement slab. They were reasonably priced, did the job when they said they would be here, and went above and beyond. *** created lovely swirl designs into the patio cement and then a different design into the sidewalk so that it was slip proof. *** Bublick also had lovely river stone put in a 12" space between house and sidewalk. I had thought the sidewalk would go to the house but he explained the reasons for not doing it. Very logical and caring reasons so he put the river stone between the two. The whole job was professionally done and reasonably priced. The workers were even careful of a hydrangea bush I had near the patio so that it still looks fine. Thank you *** and ***. Great job!!! Thank you!!
