Initial Business Response /* (1000, 15, 2016/07/12) */
Consumer's Original Complaint:
I had issues being able to contact the coach, he would not return my attempts to contact himI tried for multiple days to reach the league for helpno one called or emailed me backOnce we became upset and
wanted answers the league said my son was banned from playing with them and would not refund my money
BACKGROUND CONTEXT:
League Refund Policy
As stated on our League's website (http://www.bbrbaseball.org/organizations/1686/pages/XXXXX):
"All refunds are subject to a $administration fee and must be requested by the Sunday prior to the league's first draftNo refunds are offered after this date."
Coaches are Volunteers
Similar to nearly all Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Leagues throughout the country, our coaches are volunteers, and all of them are screened and go through a background checkThese volunteer coaches receive no pay for the hours they devote to planning and holding practices, communicating with the parents, preparing line-ups, managing the players, and coaching the gamesIn light of this, our league attempts to thank our coaches as often as we can, and we expect the parents of our players to demonstrate that same level of appreciation for their timeWithout parent volunteers to coach, our league would not happenWith that said, we understand that conflicts may arise, and we expect some measure of patience in waiting for a response to an inquiry or concernMost of our coaches are also working full time jobs and are not expected to be "on call" 24/for our league
24-hour Cooling-off Period and League Chain of Command
The standard coaching mantra in our league is for our coaches to make themselves available to answer questions from parentsHowever, if a parent has an issue or complaint, they are told kindly to wait hours and then contact the coach directly so the concern can be attempted to be resolvedIf the issue/complaint cannot be resolved, then they are asked to contact the Division Director (i.e., the board member assigned to that specific level of play, e.g., Rookies, Minors, Majors, Prep)If the matter still cannot be resolved, then they are asked to contact the League's Board Vice President and, if necessary, the President
Specific incident leading up to the parent quitting the team on June 6,
On Saturday, June 4, 2016, this particular team held a practice from 9:am to amAfter calling his son off the practice field while practice was still going on, the father *** responded to his son's question of "Where are we going" with "Get your stuff; we have *** to do." This was overheard by two coaches present at the practiceWe had no idea that there was any problem, just that he had to leave and that he was seemingly upset about something
DIRECT RESPONSES TO THE SPECIFIC CLAIMS:
Claim #1: "I had issues being able to contact the coach, he would not return my attempts to contact him."
RESPONSE: Below is the email chain of communication, beginning on Saturday, June 4, 2016, that shows the parents *** waited minutes between contacting the coach immediately and requesting a phone call conversation after practice (11:am) and sending a second email at 11:am stating that "We're done with the baseball season." Note: Our coach had stayed after practice until 11:am that day and worked with the boys who wanted extra pitching and batting reps
EMAIL #1:

Could you call me when you can
(Father)

EMAIL #3:

Sent: Monday, Jun 6, XXXX XX:XX AM
Sorry to hear about that, (parents' names)
We enjoyed working with (player's name) this seasonHe's a good kid and a good baseball player
I also appreciate your help at the games the other day, (father's name)
We wish (your son) the best
Coach (name)
CLAIM #2: "I tried for multiple days to reach the league for helpno one called or emailed me back."
RESPONSE: We doubt the veracity of this claimAccording to our League's Website Manager, only one email was sent by the complainant to ***@bbrbaseball.org at 8:pm on Monday, June 6, requesting a call backAt least one phone call attempt was made by the League Vice President to the complainant the following day, but he was unable to leave a message because the voicemail was not working correctly
CLAIM #3: "Once we became upset and wanted answers the league said my son was banned from playing with them and would not refund my money."
RESPONSE: It seems the parent was upset from the initial email on Saturday, June 4, sent minutes after the practice was officially over, but there was no indication in the communication of what the problem wasThe League has not yet taken any formal action to "ban" the player from playing, although this may be taken under consideration by the League's Board of Directors at a future Board Meeting, in accordance with the League's Bylaws in response to the father's public outburst on Tuesday, June After quitting the league (11:am email on Saturday, June 4, 2016), and receiving a "farewell email response" from the coach on Monday, June 6, 2016, the father showed up at a scheduled baseball game on Tuesday, June 7, seemingly intoxicated and ready to engage in a fightHe started off cursing at the head coach, the assistant coaches, the players, the umpire, and the other parents and when the umpire ejected him from the game and head coach announced that the police would be called if he refused to leave, the father said, "I (obscenity omitted) came here prepared to go to jail," and was finally escorted off the field by another team parentThe request for a refund seems particularly disingenuous given that of the scheduled games during our regular season, the particular player in question played in of themThe head coach's son played in gamesMost players missed at least one game during the regular season due to illness or some other family or school commitmentThe total fee of $for the season included a fitted baseball cap, a jersey, and at least games of baseballNo refund can be reasonably expected by a parent who decides to pull their player from a team after 80% of the season is completedAnd, as the League Refund Policy states on our website, no refunds will be provided after the player is "drafted" on a team and the season has begun
CONCLUDING COMMENT:
If a player's parents are unhappy with the coach, they are asked to initially speak directly with the coachIf a resolution cannot be reached, they are told to present their concern to the Division DirectorIf it still is not resolved, they could have contacted the League Vice President and/or PresidentThe contact information for both the Division Director and the League Vice President and President are on the League's websiteIt seems a bit more than coincidental that this complaint was filed with the Revdex.com on June 8, 2016, one day after the parent was ejected from a league gameFurthermore, not only have we never had any concerns with this particular coacha former League President and Prep Division Director; in fact, we have received numerous compliments regarding the positive coaching and overall baseball experience he provides (signed letters of support from other team parents can be provided upon request)We respectfully request the Revdex.com review the evidence in this case and dismiss the complaint with prejudice
