I am writing in reference to an incident that took place Friday, October 7, 2016 at your Kearny, NJ location at approximately 9:50PM.
I entered the store with the intention of picking up a gallon of wine upon request for my sister, who is very much of age(25). As I approached the counter to check out my purchase I was immediately asked if I was expecting, I thought it was quite rude to assume that a woman is pregnant but to avoid any conflict I responded, "yes." The "owner" of this location declined my purchase and told me that it was "illegal in the US to sell alcohol to a pregnant woman." Then he proceeded to point to a sticker posted by the register of a sign that stated "A pregnant woman never drinks alone"(which I'm aware is a mandatory message that liquor stores have to have visible) as if to imply that I was purchasing the gallon of wine for my own personal consumption. I was completely offended. Not only that but my human rights were completely violated, It is NOT illegal for a pregnant woman to purchase alcohol in the US, especially NOT in the state of NJ. He then proceeded to tell me that he "wouldn't lose sleep tonight over this incident" and that I should "go home and take it as a grain of salt". I was extremely upset. He then yelled out to a vehicle passing by in concern that "She's pregnant and she's trying to buy liquor". At this point I was disrespected and belittled. I did threaten to go to your corporate office as well as my lawyer and that is my intent. As the heated conversation ended, he stated that "I shouldn't be in a liquor store on a Friday night trying to buy a gallon of wine" and then closed his doors in my face as he says "Go take care of your baby". I have never in my life been so humiliated and disrespected by a store owner. He threw his $75,000 salary in my face as if to suggest that he was better than me. The purchase of the alcohol was never intended for my consumption as I am 7 1/2 months pregnant with a healthy baby boy. I was judged outright and accused of trying to drink alcohol while pregnant as well as disrespected. I do not have a name for this very rude gentleman but I do remember him by face. I am also on your surveillance camera around the time of 9:50PM on Friday, October 7th.. This is a discriminatory act!
