This is in response to complaint #[redacted].  This customer states she wanted an estimate for repairs to her vehicle. In order to determine what the...

problem is with the vehicle, especially in cases when a dash light indicating engine problems or any time of engine related problem is indicated otherwise, a diagnostic test must be performed to "troubleshoot" the issue.  One cannot just look at the engine and determine the problem. We utilize [redacted] scanners which hook up to a module panel and read any trouble codes that are on in the vehicles computer.  This scanner reads codes only and shows them on the scanner screen to read. There is no printing ability on these scanners. They are not diagnostic computer programs as used in dealers where a report can be printed. 
The customer asked for our mechanic to "troubleshoot" the problem with her vehicle. Without running the scanner to receive the trouble shooting codes from the vehicles computer we would not be able to assess the issues and provide an estimate for possible repairs.  We performed the service as she requested. Our charge for the scanner hook up and mechanics time to perform the process were charged accordingly.
