C J Marine Reviews (1)
Review: On July 5/14 I pulled my boat out of the Desmoines marina to have it serviced to go on a trip. I took the boat to CJ Marine and dropped it off. A couple days later [redacted] one of the owners called me and told me the 200 hp Yamaha had a blown cylinder and needed to have the power head rebuilt, he told me it would be $4200 and needed the money up front. I brought him a check for the full amount the next day and he told me it would take a week. August 1st the work was complete and I was told I could pick it up. They were testing my motor and it sounded terrible, they told me it was ok and go ahead and take it and use it. I went to launch it and it wouldn't start. I used my trolling motor to get back to the marina about 5 miles and put the batteries on a charger. I later found out the starter went out so I put one in at a cost of $550. The next morning myself and my girlfriend left early to fish a salmon derby and we made it about 2 miles and the engine blew up. We fished on the trolling motor for a few hours and limped back into the marina. I pulled the boat out the next day August 3 at a cost of $75 and took it back to them august 4th. They said they would take care of it and it would be about a week. He told me the machine shop put the wrong bearings in the engine. On Tuesday August 12 [redacted] called me and told me my trolling motor was stole from their yard, he said that they are not responsible for the loss and I needed to bring him $3500 and he would install a new one, no way! He also told me people are stupid and he should give lessons on insurance to scam them. He said I should tell them that I had a remote steering unit $3000 and he would install it for a fee or I could pocket the money. $1200 worth of poles and fishing gear was also taken. I got the boat back August 28th and the head gaskets were leaking water, the oil tank would not fill up and the choke didn't work. He told me take it and run it and maybe the gaskets would seat. Still no trolling motor! I brought the boat back September 8th to have new head gaskets installed and fix the other problems. I got the boat back September 18 no leaks but the oil tank still doesn't fill and the choke doesn't work. I am done with them! No more chances! I want my trolling motor replaced. [redacted] asked me if I read the fine print on the bottom of the work order I signed saying they are not responsible for stolen items. I still have never seen a work order or signed anything. I have paid a total of $4500 to them and don't have a working boat. Please help!Desired Settlement: Replace 8hp Yamaha electric start, power trim and tilt motor and custom stainless steel prop protector ring. Value $4000
Initial Business Response /* (1000, 6, 2014/10/06) */
Mr [redacted] brought his boat to our shop in July because the motor was not running right and would not idle, upon inspection we found that one of his cylinders had blown, Mr [redacted] came to the shop to visually inspect the damage to his motor, he was shown by one of the owners, [redacted]. At that time options for repair were discussed, Mr [redacted] decided to have his motor rebuilt. His powerhead was sent to [redacted] located at [redacted] Auburn Wa XXXXX, they have been in business since 1981, we have used them for all our powerhead repairs for several years. as we do not have a machine shop here at our facility. Mr [redacted] was aware his powerhead was not being repaired at our facility, he came to the shop a couple times wondering if we got his powerhead back from the machine shop. wondering when his boat would be ready. As soon as Mr [redacted]'s powerhead arrived at our shop just in time to get his boat done for the upcoming fishing derby, Unfortunately Mr [redacted] experienced difficulty with his motor, He brought his boat back to the shop, it was determined the machine shop had made an error and had installed the wrong wrist pin bearings. We removed Mr [redacted]s powerhead and sent it to the machine shop where it was repaired under their warranty with no cost to Mr [redacted]. The motor runs good now, Mr [redacted] met with [redacted] at the des moines marina on Oct 1st to inspect his choke, and his oil filling system, the choke was working and together they diagnosed the oil filling problem. Unfortunately while Mr [redacted]s boat was at our shop
the second time, someone broke into our storage yard and stole a couple kicker motors, one of them belonged to Mr [redacted]. The Des Moines Police was contacted a report was filed. Case # XX-XXXX. Mr [redacted] asked for a quote for his insurance company, he was given a verbal quote. Mr [redacted] indicated his insurance company would not cover his loss because he failed to add the new kicker motor to his policy. we do keep all customer boats in a locked yard with a chain link and barbed wire fence. we take every precaution necessary to protect our customers property. We do have signs in our shop indicating our policies, also our policy is stated on every work order sign in sheet. We do feel bad when this sort of thing happens, but we are not responsible for Mr [redacted]s loss. Mr [redacted] has been a long time customer of CJ marine. we have a 1999 yamaha 9.9 kicker motor we offered to rig on Mr [redacted]s boat for him. but he declined, we are currentley working with Mr [redacted] to resolve all of our differences, and hope to be able to do so soon.
