This lighter exploded and caught fire on the bathroom counter, ruining the counter. If someone was not home to put the fire out, our whole house would have burnt down. I see no reason why this should have happened. It was not hot in the house and was not near any other heat supply. The lighter had not been used since the night before.

I am rejecting this response because:
This is true. However, I responded to them, mentioning that I did not feel comfortable handing over the only evidence I had that proved negligence on their part in regards to their brand. I had no representation at the time. If the Revdex.com thinks it's best for me to send in the lighter, I will do so. Let me know how to continue.

I purchased a Scripto lighter last year. Scirpto is a subsidiary of Calico Brands Inc. The lighter spontaneously combusted without cause. It had not been used for hours before it exploded. The lighter exploded in my home, on top of a purse. I reached out to the company to tell them what happened and spoke with their attorney - ***. I wanted to bring this to their attention so that they can investigate and reimburse me for the damage. It is of course alarming that the lighter exploded for no reason, especially since this could be a safety issue for other customers. At first, *** seemed like he was willing to help. He told me that Calico was going to investigate and had me mail the lighter that caused the damage. He also told me that Scripto would reimburse me for the damaged purse. When I followed up two months later (in July 2018), he said the investigation was still ongoing and changed his tone. He alleged that the delay was because the company only has only one engineer on-staff. He was very rude and impolite. Nearly 8 months later, and *** has gone silent. Aside from wanting the reimbursement for the damage caused by their product, it is important this matter is investigated properly to ensure the integrity and safety of their product - especially since this is not the first time something similar has happened with their products in the Borough of Queens (New York). htt***n/lighter-company-i***2-1a5ede1a82ef.html

Calico Brands Response • Jan 16, 2019

Dear Ms.

I understand that you believe our response represents our agreement that the complainant’s version of the account is truthful, but in this case, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The consumer purchased a lighter from a dollar retailer. Calico Brands, Inc. did not sell a lighter to this person. Certainly the price of the lighter was not $250. Scripto is not a subsidiary of Calico Brands, Inc. Calico Brands, Inc. was contacted by the customer who complained a lighter she purchased from the retailer spontaneously combusted in her purse. An investigation was conducted. In the consumer’s initial report to the company, she said she had thrown away the lighter that she claims malfunctioned. However, she sent in a lighter with most of the lighter’s parts missing and the body of which was burned. The lighter still had 60% of its gas still remaining. No defect in the product, other than what appeared to be the consumer’s mishandling, was identified. The consumer was advised that lighters do not spontaneously combust and that there was no defect in the product for which Calico could be held responsible. At no time was any promise of compensation or reimbursement made. The customer’s claim that she was mistreated is untrue. The customer was told in July that no defect in the lighter for which the company could claim responsibility had been identified. Unfortunately, the consumer purchased another purse in June (a month before the completion of the investigation) for $250 and never offered any evidence of what the purse she claims was damaged actually cost. Every time the customer communicated with the company or its counsel, she received a response. Pocket lighters do not spontaneously combust. The customer’s reference to a “similar incident” is badly misplaced. The incident the consumer is referring to involved two children and a utility lighter.

I am rejecting this response because:
I never told Mr. that I threw away the lighter that exploded, as he claims - on the contrary, I told him I threw away the other Scripto lighters I had because of the experience I had with the brand. I have the email exchange that proves he is lying about this (attached). I kept the malfunctioning lighter so that the matter could be properly investigated, which I highly doubt that it was, considering he never got back to me about any findings, despite multiple follow-ups. I also doubt that such a large company has one engineer to investigate such important safety concerns, as Mr. claimed in the email chains I've provided. Please note the timeline for the email chains I've provided - and the many excuses I was given by Mr. (i.e. the one engineer on staff is away in Asia for two weeks.) I find it alarming that such a large company that sells millions of lighters in the U.S. annually can wait weeks - even months - before investigating a faulty product that randomly exploded. There is absolutely no regard for public safety - the investigation should have been made a priority. Please note that I have a witness to the event that I can connect you to.I actually have email records of the initial report. I mailed the lighter that malfunctioned - and even sent Mr. photos of the PINK melted plastic on the purse and on another orange bag. This is evidence that it was in fact the same lighter. Scripto received the malfunctioning lighter - I even sent Mr. the tracking number. I asked for the details of the report/investigation and they were never provided. I also asked for the lighter to be mailed back so that I can have someone else investigate the issue, and my calls went unanswered. I included the initial report email exchanges that proves Mr. is lying and providing the Revdex.com with false details. This is not just an issue of the purse - this is an issue of public safety. This lighter had not been used excessively, which is why about 60 percent of the lighter fluid was still in tact. I even told Mr. in our initial exchanges the lighter had been used about "50 times." So this would, in fact, add up as to why 60 percent of the lighter fluid was in the lighter. The business never shared its investigation findings with me. It took them months to "investigate" and I've followed up several times last year. I always got the run around from Mr.. The price of the lighter was not $250, however, the price of the purse that was damaged as a result of their faulty product was $250. The lighter did not explode in my purse - it exploded on top of my purse. I have included email exchanges in which Mr. asks me to send the receipt for the purse that was damaged (for reimbursement). This lawyer is merely protecting his client and making up details. The lighter has not been used for HOURS before it exploded - at room temperature, unprovoked. This is not an isolated incident. Scripto has been involved in several lawsuits alleging negligence. There are several Internet chains in which users have similar experiences. Here are just a few more examples https://www***com/newsroom-news-Settlement-for-Family-Girl-Killedhttps://la***es/federal/district-courts/FSup***98/2***/ he consumer purchased a lighter from a dollar retailer.
