Due to patient confidentiality we do not comment publicly on
specific patient interactions.  Here is
some information on our acceptance of [redacted] insurance.  Our group has accepted [redacted] ([redacted]) insurance since
our inception in 1998.  We continue to
accept [redacted] insurance...

today.   Over the
past few years [redacted] has chosen to contract with an outside vision care
insurance group for routine vision care for some of the plans offered to their subscribers.   They
have added this “feature” to various plans without educating the subscribers
and (we have been told) sometimes not even educating the business owners who
purchase the plans to provide coverage for their employees.  We are not (by choice) a participating provider in the
vision plan that [redacted] has contracted with for routine vision coverage for
some of its plans.  They are contracting
with a third party provider to provide routine vision care and they call the
product [redacted].  We have never
participated with [redacted].   After a thorough review of the plan features
we determined that we could not participate in the plan (taking severely
reduced reimbursements) and continue to offer the high level of care that we
pride ourselves in providing to our patients.   
We do continue to accept [redacted] insurance which covers medical eye care
and in some cases still covers routine vision care.       Some [redacted] plans have this separate vision care coverage
and some do not.  The only way we know
which [redacted] plans have routine vision care coverage direct with [redacted] and
which are covered by a third party vision plan is if the information is on the
[redacted] card (most times it is not) or if the patient has been educated on the
differences in the coverage for vision care (again, our experience is that the
majority of subscribers have not been made aware of this separate
coverage.)  Although we do work with our patients to confirm coverage if
it is requested prior to the exam, we can not be responsible for knowing
the details of the routine vision care coverage for every plan offered by every
insurer.

Casco Bay Eye Care states that they will not respond publicly to this complaint due to my patient confidentiality. However they do state it was their decision not to participate in the insurance for routine eye exams offered by [redacted] due to [redacted] contracting out to a third party and their reduced reimbursements. Since that is the case to which they admit then I believe it is Casco Bay's responsibility to inform customers. I should have been informed that Casco Bay Eye Care does not take [redacted] when I presented my insurance card prior to my exam. And I was told that the insurance information on my card matched what they had on file, had accepted in the past, and decided to opt out. It would be one thing if I was the only person this happened to. But, as I was told on the phone, this mistake happens all the time. So then they are aware of the issue and ought to be obligated to take steps to avoid it, because customers are being misled.
