The client presented their dog to our practice on December 13, for a castration and soft palate reduction surgery to help correct a breathing issue The client signed an estimate that ranged between $and $for those two procedures Following proper surgical protocol, we commenced with the “cleaner” procedure first which in this case would be the castration We then repositioned the patient for the soft palate reduction At this time DrOttosen was visualizing the soft palate and noticed an abgrowth that should be removed He then called the client to inform them of the concern and to receive their consent to remove the additional mass The client agreed The procedure proceeded as planned at this point and the patient recovered from anesthesia uneventfully After the patient fully recovered the patient had explosive diarrhea which was diagnosed as stress colitis The client informed us later that it was common for the patient to have diarrhea when stressed We also treated for the stress colitis so the patient did not become dehydrated post-anesthesia The final invoice for December 13, was $1,This invoice included the three procedures listed above (the two simpler procedures and the additional, complicated mass debulking), histopathology analysis of the mass to an outside laboratory, and the treatment for the stress colitis T Unfortunately, the diagnosis from histopathology was not positive During the phone call to the client checking on the patient and relaying the histopathology results the client reported that the patient was doing well, and she said he was breathing better than he had in a long timeDue to the malignant nature of the mass, the patient was recently euthanized at our practice This invoice total was $ $was by the client choice of private cremation and a memorial paw print These are charges due directly to the cremation company and are not involving the practice other than to transfer the patient The other $was to pay for the controlled substances to perform the procedureThe malignant nature of this cancer makes the case unfortunate We understand the client’s frustration with the medical case, but we provided appropriate medical care and should therefore be appropriately compensated for our time and suppliesIf you should have any further questions regarding this case, please feel free to contact me

The client presented their dog to our practice on December 13, 2017 for a castration and soft palate reduction surgery to help correct a breathing issue.  The client signed an estimate that ranged between $655.40 and $889.99 for those two procedures.  Following proper surgical protocol, we...

commenced with the “cleaner” procedure first which in this case would be the castration.  We then repositioned the patient for the soft palate reduction.  At this time Dr. Ottosen was visualizing the soft palate and noticed an abnormal growth that should be removed.  He then called the client to inform them of the concern and to receive their consent to remove the additional mass.  The client agreed.  The procedure proceeded as planned at this point and the patient recovered from anesthesia uneventfully.  After the patient fully recovered the patient had explosive diarrhea which was diagnosed as stress colitis.  The client informed us later that it was common for the patient to have diarrhea when stressed.  We also treated for the stress colitis so the patient did not become dehydrated post-anesthesia.  The final invoice for December 13, 2017 was $1,343.78. This invoice included the three procedures listed above (the two simpler procedures and the additional, complicated mass debulking), histopathology analysis of the mass to an outside laboratory, and the treatment for the stress colitis.  T  Unfortunately, the diagnosis from histopathology was not positive.  During the phone call to the client checking on the patient and relaying the histopathology results the client reported that the patient was doing well, and she said he was breathing better than he had in a long time. Due to the malignant nature of the mass, the patient was recently euthanized at our practice.  This invoice total was $295.44.  $235.44 was by the client choice of private cremation and a memorial paw print.  These are charges due directly to the cremation company and are not involving the practice other than to transfer the patient.  The other $60.00 was to pay for the controlled substances to perform the procedure. The malignant nature of this cancer makes the case unfortunate.  We understand the client’s frustration with the medical case, but we provided appropriate medical care and should therefore be appropriately compensated for our time and supplies. If you should have any further questions regarding this case, please feel free to contact me.
