The customer was told at that time that we were not a dealer for that product line, but we could work on the machine. We took the time to work up a quote for parts and labor and conveyed it to the customer. The customer was told up front that because of the age of the machine and us not being a dealer for that product line, it was going to take time to get the parts in stock in order to complete the work. The customer was also told that we could not fix the leaking fuel injectors in their given time range or budget because the parts were not in the continental US and it was going to cost an extra $1,200 to $1,500. At that time, the customer was fine with us making the repairs we quoted them and not replacing the fuel injectors.Soon after the first repair, we made 2 service calls on site for issues not related to our initial repairs. These were calls that we did not charge to the customer. The first call (11/4/14) was due to a loose wire from a glow plug indicator lamp that was torn off. Our service tech repaired the issue and stayed with the machine while the customer ran it for 30 minutes. Four days later (11/11/14), we were called out because the machine was not running. This call was due to the machine being out of fuel. We also discovered that the aftermarket glow switch was starting to have intermittent problems. This switch was not part of any work we had done previously, because it was put on the machine by the customer prior to coming to us for repairs.A week after going out on the second service call (11/18/14), the machine came back to us with more fuel loss problems After fixing the initial problems, it was determined that the injectors had to be replaced in order for the machine to run properly. After doing some intense research, we were able to find an online company that sold [redacted] parts. The issue at this point was that the fuel injectors were on back order and had to come from Asia. We were only able to find remanufactured parts (which is what was in the machine already). The customer was told at that time that we could order the parts but had no control over when we were going to receive them as they were on back order and coming from overseas. In the meantime, we worked up a quote for the fuel injectors and labor. At that time, the customer agreed to the number and we ordered the parts. I told the customer I would call them when the parts came in and let them know when we would start to work on the machine. The customer called ever so often to check on the machine and was told each time we were still waiting on the parts to be delivered. After over three months of waiting, the parts were finally delivered the second week of February 2014. The mechanic that worked on the machine began the process of changing out the injectors on 2/16/14 and completed the work on 2/20/14. Once the injectors were replaced, we attempted to test run the machine to insure the issue was resolved. At that time, we found that the engine would not turn over. We then discovered that the battery had been replaced with a car battery (which is not appropriate for the machine). I called the customer and was given the ok to replace the battery. Once we replaced the battery, the machine fired up and test operated fine with no fuel leaks. I then called the customer and told them the machine was ready for pickup and gave them the final amount which was $1,477.92. The customer was upset because they said we agreed on $1,200 for the work. I told them the difference was the cost of the battery which we did not know needed to be replaced during the initial repair quote. I also reminded them that we had not charged them for the two service calls we made after the initial repairs (10/1/14).After about a week, they came to pick up the machine. They were upset about the extra money they had to spend to get the machine functional. I told them again at that time the extra cost was due to the new battery and the tax that goes with it (a battery that they agreed for us to replace). After some interaction, I agreed to only charge them $1,200 and we would be finished with the situation.I would like to apologize for the fact that it ended the way that it did. We do feel that we repaired the machine per our quotes and tried to keep the customer updated on its status. When they picked the machine up it test operated fine with no leaks or external problems. The customer was told each service what the cost would be and they were in agreement on each occasion.
