Dear [redacted],

Cedar Park Physician Associates has the ability to remove the charge for the brace from my bill. Being that I did not NEED the brace, did not ASK for the brace, and ALREADY had 2 sets of braces of better quality should make clear to you that I SHOULD NOT be charged for the brace.

Whether or not you knew if my insurance company would charge me once you charged them for the brace is irrelevant. I am telling you that it is not acceptable that your office CHARGED my insurance company at all. The hand specialist did not charge me or my insurance company for the set of braces that they gave me 6 months prior to my going to Cedar Park Physician Associates. The physical therapist's office did not charge me or my insurance company for the set of braces that they gave me 5 months prior to my going to Cedar Park Physician Associates. Your office, however, did choose to charge my insurance company, and subsequently me, for half of the product (and of a much lower quality) that I already had, did not need, did not ask for, and was not the purpose of my visit.
You have stated that you see a need to notify patients in your office in the future when you charge them and their insurance company. That implies that you recognize that I was not treated fairly and have suffered consequences as a result of your office's actions. Therefore, remove this charge from my bill.

Your billing office has the ability to remove the charge and it is only reasonable and fair for you to do so immediately especially having recognized that Cedar Park Physician Associates made a mistake. In fact, the office manager offered to reduce my entire bill by $70, however, I did not accept his offer because the amount does not satisfy the amount that I was wrongly charged by Cedar Park Physicians.

I have offered to return the low-quality brace that I did not need and did not use several times. However, I am letting you know again, that I will bring it back if that is what is needed for you to treat me fairly and remove the charge of $134.57 from my bill.

Dear [redacted]:
Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention. Cedar Park Physician Associates has a contract with the patient's...

health insurer and is contractually obligated to charge patients their assigned portion from their insurance. The patient's amount due of $134,57 is her assigned patient portion according to her insurance plan.
The amount allowed for reimbursement for an item or service (in this case, a brace) is determined by the patient's insurance plan. If the insurance company determines that an item or service meets the requirements of medical necessity, it will determine the allowable reimbursement for that item or service. The patient's insurance determined that the allowable reimbursement was $134.57 and assigned this amount to the patient. This amount went toward meeting the patient's deductible.
Our practice deals with many plans and we have no way to knowing whether an item or service will be separately chargeable to a patient's account and Whether the patient will have a portion due. Insurance companies place the responsibility for knowing the patient's plan content and benefits on the patient. In the future, our practice will make an effort to notify patients in our office when an item or service may be separately chargeable. Unfortunately, we will not always be able to anticipate this fact before or at the time of care.
Cedar Park Physician Associates billed the patient the amount we were contractually obligated to bill her. This amount went toward fulfilling the patient's deductible. Please contact me if I may provide any additional information.
Sincerely,
[redacted]
