On January 2018, *** *** brought his dog Bullet into OK Humane Spay/Neuter Clinic to be neuteredAs part of the clinic’s admission process, Mr*** signed a surgical admission form that states: “I either certify that my animal has been vaccinated within one year prior to this
date or waive my right to protect my animal by having it vaccinated, or request recommended vaccinations at the time of surgeryI understand that it takes up to two weeks for vaccinations to protect my animalI understand the inherent risks of failing to maintain current vaccinations and waive all claims arising out of or connected with the performance of this operation due to such failure.” The week of January 16th, Mr*** contacted OK Humane Spay/Neuter Clinic to report that Bullet, as well as one of his other dogs, was showing symptoms of kennel coughPer our established protocols, the staff informed Mr*** that he could bring Bullet by the clinic any weekday (Monday-Friday) between 9:am and 2:pm for our staff veterinarians to examine and treat at minimal cost to Mr***Mr*** did not bring his pets back to OK Humane Spay/Neuter Clinic for our doctors to examineHe called on Wednesday, Jan 24th to inform us that he had taken one of his dogs (who was never a patient at OK Humane Spay/Neuter Clinic) to an after-hours veterinarian for treatmentMr*** requested that the clinic reimburse him for the cost of this veterinarian billOn Thursday, Jan 25th, I spoke with Mr*** about his situationHe explained to me that he was unable to bring in his pets during the window of time available due to his work scheduleHe further stated that there was no one available to transport his pets to get them here on his behalf during those hours, so when his older dog became ill he decided to bring the dog to an after-hours clinicHe did not contact the clinic to inform us that our recheck hours were not conducive to his work schedule and allow us the opportunity to trouble shoot and try to explore other optionsI explained to Mr*** that, while we do everything to mitigate cross-contamination and exposure of our patients to illness, the model of our clinic does have the potential for exposing dogs to kennel coughIf a pet has not been vaccinated for kennel cough prior to coming to the clinic, the risk of contracting the virus is low, but presentWhen this has occurred in the past, we have always worked with pet owners to treat their pets at minimal cost to themIn my years at this clinic, this has occurred only times, and in each instance we were able to treat any dogs that became ill as a result of exposure at our clinicI told Mr*** that I was sympathetic to his situation, but that I was not able to pay the bill for an animal that had not been seen at all by our doctors, and said that as a gesture of good faith I would like to reimburse him the cost of the services the Bullet received here at the clinic on January 8, which totaled $I performed a refund to the credit card that he provided on Thursday, Jan 25th in the amount of $I apologized to Mr*** again for his experience, and reminded him of the hours that we were able to see pets to treat himI also reminded him that someone could bring the dogs to us on his behalf if it absolutely did not work with his scheduleI suggested that in the future he follows recommended vaccination schedules for his pets, as dogs can be exposed to kennel cough in a number of social situations, including dog parks and pet storesAt no time in his contact with my staff or myself did Mr*** inform us that he had filed a complaint with the Revdex.com-*** *** Clinic Manager, OK Humane Place/Spay/Neuter Clinic *** *** ***@okhumane.org
