Revdex.com:
The business owner is erroneous in his recalling of the events that caused damage to our tableOur dining room is ATTACHED to our kitchen and our kitchen is VERY small so tools were placed on our table for convenience while workingBusiness owner accepted responsibility for the damage to the table and even asked if he had damaged our *** coffee maker (which they had also placed on the table when moving things from the counter) because it had a crack in the top and I told him no, that the only item damaged was the tableBusiness owner offered the insurance information by bringing a copy of his policy to us on his own accord - we never asked for itAdditionally, the only attorney involved is the business owner's attorney as we indicated in our initial complaint that we had not started legal proceedings against the business owner for failure to comply with his offer to make remittance for the damage caused to our table while he was working in our homeRegarding the amount he's indicated my husband is "demanding" from him - this is simply a estimate of the cost of remittance should the business owner fail to make good on covering the cost of replacing the table and included court fees, parking fees, filing fees, and loss wages for taking time from work should we be forced to take him to court to have him meet his responsibility to cover the cost of the damaged tableRegarding business owner's comment about "lady met at lumber yard complaining about contractors" this too is erroneousI was at a local home-improvement store and was asking the employees there about recommendation for contractors because we had just moved to the area and I didn't know anyI had expressed some concerns to the register clerk about how much more expensive things are here than from where I moved from and the business owner overhead me and approached me in the store and expressed an interest in discussing a possible working arrangementHe offered to meet with my husband and I and discuss options for what we were looking to have done at our homeHe came with his dogs to our house and gave us a verbal outline of what he thought things would cost should he start the workHe came to our home with other workers (never mentioned us having to pay for additional workers) and they began working for usOne of his workers was actually working at another site and had come to our home to drop off tools - we were charged for his time at our house AND for his driving time; my husband questioned whether or not the home owners from the other job were paying for his time as well but business owner wouldn't discuss thatI had debris in my yard from cleaning the basemen and business owner had his worker that was dropping off equipment load it up to take to the dumb (he was making a run there for the other job as well) and while he was loading items he threw away three bird feeders filled with seed and a rot-iron bird feed hanger that had fallen to the groundBusiness owner took $off his bill for his employee's error but one of the bird feeders had been hand-made by my son in while a boycott and couldn't be replaced and another was a gift from my father who had passed away the previous summer - needless to say the carelessness and lack of communication regarding moving these items to the "dump" pile left me in tears. Additionally, we were charged for the "dump run" not just for the amount the dump charged him for taking the debris but for the time his worker took to drive there - again, when we asked about the other job's allocation of their share in that cost, the business owner was not forthcoming in his comments and we are convinced that he perhaps double-billed us and the other job for the cost of the dump run debris and his employee's timeBusiness owner's "estimate" was nearly EXCESSIVELY higher than he originally had indicated and my husband was livid and wanted to discontinue his service and only pay for what he had done to that point (he still had a day's work to do)Business owner agreed to "discount our bill if we paid him in cash so that he wouldn't have to claim the wages on his income tax" and asked that we provide him a check made out to "cash" so he could cash it directly and "go buy tires for his truck"In order to save some money and get the work done before the holidays we agreed but his discount was VERY SMALL and we were hesitant to have him come back for the other jobs we had discussedWhen the time came to have another job completed in our home, business owner gave us an estimate and we agreedOn the day when the job began, business owner sent someone we didn't know to our home to start the job and then told us "we'd have to pay him for his time - that this was in addition to his estimate". When we asked the business owner about the person in our home, contact information for them, etcbusiness owner became very defensive and stated that he was a sub-contractor that worked for him and if we wanted or had questions about his work or what he'd be doing we'd have to go through him. When we questioned why, if he was a sub-contractor working FOR HIM we would have to pay him separatelyWe got no answer so we asked the worker directly and were told "we'd have to pay him because business owner was charging us the middle-man price in his estimate which included getting him out there but didn't include his fees." At that point we realized we were not only be taken advantage of, but that we were comfortable with the way this business owner handled his business dealings with usWe felt he wasn't being completely honest and we told him thisAs the business owner stated, his work was good but his overall demeanor and the way he's handled things in this experience has been both unprofessional and extremely upsettingThe issue with the damage to the table and the business owner taking care of it didn't become an issue until AFTER we told him we would not longer be requiring his services. Prior to this he was amenable to handling the cost of the replacement table without any hesitation but after we stopped our business relationship with him, he became difficult to communicate with regarding our agreement of how the table replacement should be handled and it was HIM that brought in an attorney and in order to try to get us to sign a release relinquishing him from all responsibility in damaging our table AND preventing us from our right to express our opinion and views regarding our experience with his business and with him as a business ownerWe refused to sign the release because we were not willing to be "gagged" regarding our experience with him in order to perhaps help others from possibly having the same sort of experience as we did.
