Recently had a boiler installed by Charlton Oil....as far as pride in workmanship is concerned - absolutely HORRIBLE....probably one of the worst installs that I have seen....that is not only my opinion but others in the industry when I showed them pictures of the install.....while it might be "legal" the level of pride and professionalism is pathetic....when the issues were brought to the attention of Charlton Oil, they were defended....I would not recommend this company at all.....if possible I would rate it lower than star

Ordered 100 Gallons of Fuel. Paid by check, charged by check and debit. Now causing fees. Won't release hold on account.I ordered 100 Gallons of oil on 1/28/14. I was asked how I would like to pay. I said by check. I was told I would need to provide a credit card number to verify my funds. I provided my Debit card number and asked if they could wait until morning, as I had to deposit the money that night. I was told yes.I then deposited the money at 6:00 that evening and verified with the teller (Charlotte) at the bank that the funds were immediately available for use.My oil was delivered on 1/19/14 and the check was taken. On 1/30/14 (at 8:00 PM) I looked at my checking account and noticed I had 2 Uncollected Funds Charges and 1 Insufficient Fees Charge (due to the other fees causing me to be over drawn). I also noticed that just before those, the check for Charlton Oil cleared. Due to the time, the bank was closed. On the morning of 1/31/14 I looked at my account again and noticed that after my paycheck deposited, I still had a $379 hold on my account. At 7:50 AM, I called Customer Service at my bank and spoke to [redacted]. She explained that Charlton Oil had tried to apply the hold (twice) while there was not enough funds in the account therefore causing the charges (which then caused the insufficient fees when my other bills cleared). I was told I would need to speak to the Oil Company to resolve the issue. At 8:40 AM, I called Charlton Oil and spoke to the [redacted] and explained the issue. I was told it is their policy and he would not release the hold, nor would he refund the charges. He explained that everyone is told there is a 10 day hold on their card. I explained I was not told and the check has already cleared (they have already received my money). He stated that when I last bought oil from him back in 2010 (4 years ago) I used a credit card and should know this. I explained that I have been using a different oil company for the last 4 years and would not have remembered. I explained that I wanted him to immediately release the hold. He said he needed proof that it was paid. I faxed him my bank statement and the number and contact name at my bank. I also informed him that if he did not refund the charges that I would be taking him to small claims court and he said "OK".At 9:45 on 1/31/14, I spoke to my bank to make them aware that he would be calling.Desired SettlementI would like the following charges refunded:Uncollected Funds Charge: 27.00Uncollected Funds Charge: 27.00Insufficient Funds Charge: 27.00TOTAL: $81.00Business Response Per Ms [redacted] in line 2 of complaint - she was told to provide a credit card to verify funds. She provided a debit card for us to hold funds on for ten days while we waited for her check to clear.Ten days is the amount of time it takes for us to receive the check back from our bank - depending on if our bank tries once or twice to put the check through. At the point, the preauthorization would drop off or we would charge the card if the check was insufficient.Ms [redacted] received oil on 1/29/14 not 1/19/14 as she stated in paragraph 3.The hold on Ms [redacted] card was released by Charlton Oil @ 10:35am on 1/31/14 after Ms [redacted]' bank confirmed in writing that the check had cleared.Ms [redacted] gets oil from Charlton Oil, then won't for a year or so then calls again for a delivery. Our policy for accepting checks has not changed since we started & every customer is made aware of it if they are going to write a check.Respectfully, [redacted] Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)In response to Mr. [redacted] comments:Again, at no time was I ever told that there would be a hold on my account. My Debit card may also be used as a credit card, therefore when asked I did not hesitate to provide that information. Had I been told there was going to be a hold, I would have informed the employee that I do not have a credit card. The date of delivery of oil was 1/29/14. This was a typographical error, as other dates before and after the sequence of events clearly stermine that.Mr. [redacted] is correct that I do not get oil from his company, as I get it on an as needed basis from another company. On this day that company was unable to deliver it to me in the timeframe needed, so I chose to request it from Charlton Oil. As stated by Mr. [redacted] himself, during our phone conversation, I had not gotten oil from him "since 2010" (not a year or so). After submitting this claim, I have spoken to other friends/family/neighbors/etc. and MANY have told me of the horror stories and similar stories of what has happened to them. They have also stopped using Mr. [redacted]' company for oil. As Mr. [redacted] has no intention of rectifying this situation, I now intend on notifying the Attorney General and if needed proceeding with legal action.Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.Final Business Response As a business owner, I feel bad for any customer that doesn't understand our policy. Most customers that are affected by this are the ones who use a debit card as a credit card & don't realize what the difference is and how it may affect them. A debit card is linked to your account & may be the same account you are writing a check from which means we are holding funds while waiting for your check to clear on the same account.A credit card means you have credit available & it will be used if your check doesn't clear. These policies have been in effect since 2005.Charlton Oil provided service to Ms [redacted] even when her regular company could not.
