Cheap Charlie's Trees & Landscape Design Inc. Reviews (12)

The original price of the job was $2000 for the removal of 10 trees. The problem was in the 3 additional trees. As were explained to the homeowner when the crew was there that morning.  The quote was not given for the 3 trees that they wanted down at that time.  This was also explained to...

the homeowner.  You can look on google maps and see the sizes of the trees on the property are not all the same, that is what  I was told over the phone when I spoke with her.  I was also told that the estimator was not at the house the day the job was done.  I then informed her that he was not only there he was discussing everything with her husband.  She continued to argue with me and told me he wasn't and then finally said "well then my husband's as big a liar as your crew is"! Our crew did walk off the job but only after they agreed to do the original 10 trees for the original price and then he went into the house called his wife and came back out and said his wife didn't want to do that, so they left.  His wife did tell me on the phone that her husband didn't know they were leaving, none of that is true, not only did he know he stopped Kyle in his car to talk to him again.  I tried to explain numerous time that the original job could be done for her but the other trees were not priced as she claimed, she continued to tell me every tree is the same size.  Just for the record they are not but in addition to that location has a lot to do with the price of trees.  I again asked if she wanted the job done she told me no, I want my permit back. I again explained to her that the permit does not work like that.  The [redacted] issues a permit to the tree service once they check everything out, they are in addition checking to make sure the tree service they are using is licensed and insured. She would have to contact the town with the name of the company she would be using.  I then called the Town and was advised to throw the permit out, that the customer would have to contact them when she decided who she would be using.

When this job was originally done in January the homeowner had original contracted with us to remove the trees and grind the stumps. While we were there they said not to do the stumps because the pool guy was going to pull them.  They called back I believe it was months later to say they...

changed their minds and wanted the stumps done. We told them at the time we could get it done but it would have to be when we were in the area, we did go back but it was done already. From a business perspective you have to understand we were there originally and time is money, although we shouldn't be expected to go back to grind the stumps at all when we were told not to, yet we did but I cannot say I can reimburse them for work that they had done by another company when had they not told us not to do the stumps the day the job was done they would've been done and this would not even be an issue. Michele I[redacted]

We did look into the complaint in Locust Valley by [redacted] and found that we did not remove the wood as we supposed to. The wood will be picked up this week.

After just reading this complaint for the first time on September **, I sent someone over to regrind this stump.  Although it is written on our contracts that we cannot grind a stump within 2 to 3 inches of a fence. The customer told our employee she didn't know what he was talking about, she...

was happy with the job.  So apparently there is no complaint or should have ever been one.

Review: This all started with my estimate for a tree removal in my new house. When I spoke with the secretary they had told me based on the contract they have to trim to lowest point of fence line. The first issue was they came worked very quickly (which is good) but cut the tree all the way down to the stump so that thousands need to be spent to replace the fence which was built around the tree and remove the stump. The next, major issue was when I got home I noticed my yard an absolute disaster, the caps of my fence thrown in my flowers and huge holes in my grass with huge branches all over. I then noticed that two large spindles on my deck were completely cracked. I called the company and set up a time for Charlie to come see it. On the day of the appointment I got a phone call not at the time scheduled from "Jimmy" stating, "no big deal I see the spindles," who decided he was going to go trespass onto my property without me being there to assess the situation. Had he come at the proper time I would have been home to discuss things with him. He then told me he would have a contractor come and fix it. He said that he would have Charlie call me. Since this day, it has been months, I have called and left several voice mails for both numbers on the website with no return phone calls.Desired Settlement: Since all of this mess, I would like a reimbursement for what I spent on the tree to fix the spindles, since they will have to take apart the railing it is going to cost me a lot of money. I would like at least half of the money returned to me.

Response:

After looking into the complaint and having knowledge of this deck system, I had the exact same spindles on my deck at one time, I know these spindles are very delicate, break easily and are very inexpensive. However, I am aware that the top rail needs to come off to get to the spindles, with that being said I feel that settling this complaint by sending [redacted] a check for $250.00 is more than fair and since that is half the price of the job and what she was asking for I think it would settle the complaint.Thank you,Michele I[redacted]

Review: To whom it may concern,

On 3/**/2013 we had Cheap Charlies tree service come in and remove 2 medium size trees from out front yard. While the workers were performing the job my husband was outside watching with couple of neighbors, while I was inside the house. Suddenly I heard a huge noise. I went outside to find that the tree had fallen directly on the house damaging the gutters that basically fell to the ground. While my husband along with the neighbors came closer one of the workers said he will fix the gutter. After the job was done (and all of our sprinkler system damaged) one of the workers nailed the gutter back. Unfortunately we have had problems with it since that day and after many attempts of my husband to try fixing the gutter we constantly find the paddle of water underneath.

I have contacted the company with complain but I have been "brushed off" for close to 2 months and told by the [redacted] that I will receive the phone call back from the [redacted], which I yet had not received. About 3 weeks ago she had asked me to fax the receipt to her which I did and which she confirmed she had received; however, it is impossible to speak to anyone there with hopes to resolve this issue as the [redacted] is available to pick up the phones 10-12 am and is not helpful at all.

I do not wish to complain about the sprinklers because they were fixed by my husband and I am aware that it could have happened when cutting the roots but I strongly believe it is their responsibility to fix the damage that they made while performing the job that we had paid them for.

I kindly ask for help as I do not see any possible resolution with this company. I am asking that they fix the damage.

Sincerely,

[redacted]Desired Settlement: I would like that this company fix the damage - broken gutters

Response:

This is in response to Revdex.com complaint #[redacted]).

The customer was complaining that we had damaged her roof gutters while removing a tree from her property... in most cases this winter gutters are failing because of the heavy snow fall and extreme temperatures. We sent a tech out to look at the home and we have determined that the damage was minimal and an easy fix so we had our tech repair this issue. I believe if you contact the customer again you will find that they are more than happy with our follow up.

If there are any other questions or comments regarding this complaint please feel free to contact me.

After filing my first complain I had finally been contacted by Cheap Charlie's and told that he will try to replace the end parts in attempt to fix the gutter; however it did not fix the problem. The gutter is still bent from the incident (tree falling on it) and the water continues to accumulate underneath it. We are very afraid that it will start leaking into a basement. I was not able to see whether replacing the end piece solved the problem until now. I had called today with my concerns and explained that the fix was not successful and replacing the end piece does not stop the water from accumulating there since the gutter is still bent and was told to that they have "more important things to do than fixing my gutter and that it is my house so I should just buy a new gutter ".

I really do think that it is very unfair that I should be paying to replace what this business had broken.

I am very much asking you for help. Thank youDesired Settlement: I would like that broken gutter replaced. It was in perfect condition before Cheap Charlie's work and they should take responsibility for the damage they did.

Response:

When we first heard of this issue we sent one of our [redacted] out to handle the damage. After fixing their gutter, our field [redacted]) got approval from the man of the house (I am assuming that this was the complainant's husband) that all was good and our services were complete and no further repairs necessary. It is now over one year since we provided service for this person and after an extremely brutal winter and very rainy spring season this client is requesting that we come and fix their gutters again. I feel that after so much time and bad weather has passed it is no longer our responsibility to fix this person's gutters. Many people on Long Island are having the same issue due to severe weather. It is just to convenient to blame our company that did work there well over a year ago and also did come back to fix any damage that was caused by our workers. We feel we did the right thing and repaired the initial damage and now any further repairs to their gutters is up to the home [redacted]. I am sorry that this customer is having these issues but we just cannot continue to be responsible for gutter damage months and months after our initial service and subsequent repairs to their gutters.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

[Your Answer Here]

We had just bought the house in January 2013. The house was inspected and gutters were in a perfect condition. We used Cheap Charlie's service on the last day of March. When I first contacted them there was no signs of severe storms and bad winter. I called about 30 times and kept being brushed off by the [redacted] who kept telling me nobody that I could talk to about the issue was available.

I was first contacted by [redacted] - the [redacted] AFTER filing the Revdex.com claim and he told me that he will attempt to fix it by replacing the end piece and he hopes it will work. Yes, my husband was there when the end piece was replaced but there was no way to tell whether the problem was fixed because it was not raining that day.

I will be happy to provide the pictures of my entire gutter showing where is it bent and where the water is causing damage.

I understand that you do not want to take responsibility for the damage that your workers caused and as I was told by the [redacted] - [redacted], you have more important things to do than fixing my gutter but your workers broke it and it is unfair that I am supposed to be repairing what was damaged while you provided services that we paid you for. 4 of my neighbors along with my husband watched the entire tree fell on my house ripping the gutter off the house. I was asked by your [redacted] to provide the invoice which I did. SHe confirmed she received it. Therefore; you can tell exactly where the tree was taken out and where the gutter is broken so I very kindly ask that you do not blame it on winter or rain.

I ask that you take responsibility and replace gutter that was damaged by your workers.

Thank you,

Response:

In resposnse to complaint number [redacted],

After reviewing all of the facts in this matter we have to respectfully decline the client's request to be refunded for the work she had done on her gutters. As far as we are concerned this issue was taken care of and cleared by the complainant's husband and our bill was paid in full and all was well. We cannot justify any reimbursement over one year after our work was completed and signed off on. We feel that this is an unfair request due to the time that has elapsed and the severity of the weather last winter. We apologize for any inconvenience or displeasure this patron may have with our company.
