When I got laid off I had to call and cancell my auto draft payments and they said they would send me financially aid. Instead they turned me over to a collection agency. I made a payment may 21. Today is June 10 and I have received collection calls all morning. They didn't even give me a chance to apply for financial aid.

On February 17th, 2016 my wife had to get an MRI from St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. The front desk told her she was required to pay for the MRI up front. They had assured her that they checked with my insurance and knew the exact amount I needed to pay ($409.61). I was reluctant to pay up front since my insurance has never required an upfront copay or partial payment, but she needed the MRI so I went along with it. On February 29th, I received an Explanation of Benefits from my insurance company saying they had paid St. Vincent and I was only responsible for $269.29. I had overpaid by $140.32 and was due a refund. I had called the doctor's office back and they told me they were not responsible for billing. They could take payments but not issue refunds. They said a third party named St.Vincent Business Office (1-877-721-6504) is responsible for issuing refunds when necessary. I started to contact them in March even though they claim our correspondence did not begin until late April. When I had initially contacted them, they told me that I was indeed due a refund of $140.32. They also told me that refunds can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to process. At this point I decided to wait patiently for my refund check in the mail. I started calling back in June since I hadn't received my check. At this point I was not taking notes on my conversations with them. I was told that the refund was still not issued because they couldn't figure out who was due the refund (whether it be me or the insurance company). They claimed all they could do is "escalate" my refund so the proper people look at it. I called back multiple times over June and July and they still weren't sure the status of my refund. All they could do was "escalate" things. At this point I was fed up with not getting anywhere. I started to take notes on my phone calls. I called on August 15th and requested to talk to a supervisor. James B., the supervisor, told me to give him 72 hours and to call him back. He gave me his number and I waited 3 days. I called him back with no answer. I waited another day and called him back. He still did not answer so I left a message. He never returned my call. I called on August 23rd and spoke with someone named Patricia. She told me a check had been sent in the mail on August 18th. This seemed to make sense to me since James had told me to give him 72 hours and he would remedy the problem. So I waited and still received no check. I called back on August 28th and spoke to someone named Rick who didn't even bother looking into my issue and told me that St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center owes me the refund. He then transferred me to St. Vincent Hospital. I hung up and called back. I then spoke with Deanna who informed me that the check was mailed on August 23rd. As you can imagine I took this with a grain of salt. Today is September 6th and I still have no refund check. I called back this morning and talked to Keshauna who proceeded to tell me my account is paid in full and I owe them no money. At this point I requested to speak to her supervisor. She went and got someone named James (possibly the same James that had been ignoring my calls). James then told me my check was mailed on August 29th. This means it should be arriving to my house any day now. I am not going to hold my breath. I am not sure if these people are lying to me on purpose or out of ignorance at this point. It seems that they are top notch employees when it comes to taking your money but when a refund is due nobody has a clue what they are doing. I wish to receive a response as to why this happened. I would also like the public to be aware of this indifference to their customers. I read a review on the Revdex.com website and it turns out I am not the first that St. Vincent has overcharged and refused to simply issue a quick refund. This has been a nightmare. Patients should always do their due diligence and make sure that they are paying the correct amount. Contact your insurance company and give them the procedure code before you hand over any sort of payment. I like the doctor's at St. Vincent. Their billing department however is atrocious and they need to find a solution to the problem
