Lets go back to the start1st home owner buys used fireplace from somplace and asks for a quote to install it. 2nd one of my employees writes a quote, when he gets to the office I looked at the quote and something doesnt seam right with the messurements. 3rd I go to the home and discover that this is infacr a wood burnning fireplace with a log set and cannot be hooked up as quoted. 4th I find the cheapest (other than box store junk) fireplace I can and install it using the cheapest way I can. Basically doing the job at cost. 5th beacause of pressure differances and cold air falling there is frost on the pipe, I replace pipe at cost.6th, pipe still has frost and cold air enters home when not in use. I wrap pipe in a ceramic wool blanket. 7th 2 years later homeowner has another contractor install pipe with the same inner diameter exhaust but slighlty larger intake. This may big in more cold air or may not. 8th I get Revdex.com notice and issue full refund, customer now has a free fireplace with premium venting, I believe this to be a great deal to the homeowner and promise that thier safty was never at risk.
As a father of four kids I completely understand your fear. Lucky the fireplace is designed to shut down long before any amout of co2 could get out. I dont recall all the details of your job but do remember that the house had a negotiate pressure issue down stairs causing cold hearth syndrome....
We have tried a few venting configurations to solve this. For whats its worth I know you where never in any danger and I would not have done anything in your home that I wouldn't do in my own. Anyway I can tell you wont care what I say at this point, I hope your frost issue is resolved. Enjoy your fireplace, happy new year. I will be sending a check out.
