I will call another contractor to see if they would come to look at the damper without any cost to us and let you know the outcome

Business responded to complaint.I would like to respond to Mrs. [redacted] complaint. We were contacted by Mrs. [redacted] via a phone call on August 21, 2014 because she was interested in getting an estimate for a new damper and some chimney repair. We scheduled an appointment and we went to her home on August...

27, 2014 and provided her with an estimate for $625. This quote included a stainless steel lock top damper for $350 and removal and replacement of a concrete crown at a discounted price of $275 (which is normally $325). We provided her with a discount on her crown because she was a family friend. At that time, Mrs. [redacted] asked for an additional senior discount, we took off an additional $50. Her new total was $575. She excepted this offer and we completed the repair on September 8, 2014. At this time Mrs. [redacted] asked for another discount, so we took off and additional $25 and we were paid $550.  In total, she was given $125 discount. She called in December 2014 to let us know that she could hear wind in her chimney and thought it was from her lock top damper.  We returned to her home on December 15 at no charge and again on December 29 (because she called again) at no additional charge.  My technician could not find anything wrong with the lock top damper which we installed. She called again on May 12, 2015 with the same complaint. I advised her at that time, that we could look for a bottom damper to install in addition to her lock top damper to help alleviate her draft. On July 19, 2015 I sent her an email to let her know that we had not come across this bottom damper yet. Our plan was to replace it at no charge because we often take them out when people install a lock top damper.  I also gave her the option of purchasing these parts at our cost and no additional charge for labor if she did not want to wait for us to come across one that we obtained from another job.  Mrs. [redacted] emailed me back on the same day and stated, "I don't see why we need to pay for any additional damper plate. We purchased a new damper, not a used one, which should have done the job".  I returned her email on July 20, 2015 and said "your chimney is such that you have a draft. There is nothing wrong with your lock top damper. You are more than welcome to have another chimney person come out to look at it. You can either put insulation in the chimney, or a damper at the bottom."  I also added "there is no difference between used or new, they are metal parts, as long as it is not rusty, no one would know the difference between new or used."  She replied and stated "that installation should not cause any drafts or additional costs for us, I would appreciate a change in your attitude and get the problem taken care of".She emailed again on August 10, 2015 and August 14, 2015 asking about her damper.  I replied on August 14, 2015 and advised her that we would be taking a leave of absence from work due to family medical issues. On September 16, 2015 I received an email from her stating "I understand that your mom has help from Hospice for your dad that reliefs you and John from helping out" and that "if you still refuse to stand by your product and installation, I have no other choice than to contact the Revdex.com". On September 17, 2015 I replied via email that we cannot fix her draft problem without completely sealing off the chimney (which would make it unusable), or by reinstalling a damper at the bottom which would only possibly help with the draft. We never made any claims or implied that we could fix her draft issue. Unfortunately, we have no control over the wind and how it blows down her chimney.  We were hired by her to replace her damper, not to fix a drafty chimney. She had a damaged damper frame and the standard procedure in this industry is to install a lock top damper.  Her issue with her drafty chimney did not come up until after the installation was done.  It is impossible to stop a draft when there is radiant cold coming from the chimney. I told her that it is impossible to fix a draft and it is not a service that we offer. We offered to install another damper at the bottom free of charge as a favor for a family friend. But she declined this offer. The only way to completely stop a draft, would be to completely seal it with a balloon which is not a service we offer. I encouraged her to get a second opinion.  We never refused to stand behind our work. We offered Mrs. [redacted] a solution at no charge which she declined. At this time, there is nothing else that we can do to satisfy Mrs. [redacted]. We have been to her home four times and we are now at the point that we are loosing money on this job. Please let me know if you have any other questions.Thank you very much.[redacted]Chimney Wizard LLC440-286-4469
