Dear Revdex.com, Mrs [redacted] came in to our clinic in November of We explained to her at that time that since she had used her benefit to receive duplicate contacts in May of she would not be eligible for the fitting examination or contacts She elected to have us go ahead and do her fitting and order her specialized contact lenses The base exam (which would provide a prescription for glasses only) was covered by her insurance We contacted her multiple times to schedule a time to pick up her contacts with no response on her part As I mentioned earlier, her contacts were a specialized prescription made just for her and we have days to send them back to receive credit from the lab We are well within our rights to send her to collections for the fitting and the specialized materials we ordered for her nearly months ago However, when the patient phoned me yesterday and said she did not want the contacts I agreed to credit her account back for the $she was charged for the lenses (We have already paid the lab for these lenses and are now out these material costs) I told the patient that the services we rendered for the fitting and evaluation of her contact lens prescription as well as diagnostic lenses used in this determination are still her financial obligation The cost for this service was $ We would be happy to provide the contact lens prescription for the patient as soon as she pays for the service we rendered in order to achieve said prescription If the patient continues to elect not to pay for these services she will be liable for charges incurred in the attempt to collect this debt in addition to legal interest charges as outlined in the paperwork she signed at the time of service Please phone our office if we can be of further assistance Thank you, Melinda B [redacted] Office Manager

I am rejecting this response because by Washington State of Law they have to give me a copy of my prescription here is where I was reading this from, I am not saying I won't pay the $175, I just want a copy of my prescription Optometrist or Optician Holding Your Prescription Hostage? Revdex.com,
I believe the confusion the patient is experiencing has to do with the difference between a "spectacle" (glasses) prescription and a "contact lens" prescription.  After a routine examination is concluded we have a completed #7 reading which translates to a prescription for eyeglasses only.
If the patient elects to have contacts made, we have to go into additional testing and fitting for things like, base curvature, diameter, corneal topography etc...  This prescription (for contacts) is not addressed in the law the patient cited as applicable for this case.  We are not holding her prescription hostage, we provided additional testing not outlined in a base exam and did so in good faith that the patient knew and understood she would be financially liable for the extra services.
If I have misunderstood the patient and she would indeed like a copy of her eyeglass prescription (the only thing available immediately following a routine eye exam), then we would be happy to provide that for her.  A spectacle prescription, however, is not the same thing as a contact lens Rx and she will be unable to order contact lenses from it.
Again, we would be happy to give her both the spectacle prescription AND her contact lens prescription as soon as she pays for the additional testing required to determine her contact lens prescription.
I hope this information is helpful.  Please let me know if there are any other questions.

Dear Revdex.com,
Mrs. [redacted] came in to our clinic in November of 2015.  We explained to her at that time that since she had used her benefit to receive duplicate contacts in May of 2015 she would not be eligible for the fitting examination or contacts.  She elected to have us go...

ahead and do her fitting and order her specialized contact lenses.  The base exam (which would provide a prescription for glasses only) was covered by her insurance.  We contacted her multiple times to schedule a time to pick up her contacts with no response on her part.  As I mentioned earlier, her contacts were a specialized prescription made just for her and we have 30 days to send them back to receive credit from the lab.  We are well within our rights to send her to collections for the fitting and the specialized materials we ordered for her nearly 4 months ago.  However, when the patient phoned me yesterday and said she did not want the contacts I agreed to credit her account back for the $90.00 she was charged for the lenses.  (We have already paid the lab for these lenses and are now out these material costs).  I told the patient that the services we rendered for the fitting and evaluation of her contact lens prescription as well as diagnostic lenses used in this determination are still her financial obligation.  The cost for this service was $175.00.  We would be happy to provide the contact lens prescription for the patient as soon as she pays for the service we rendered in order to achieve said prescription.  If the patient continues to elect not to pay for these services she will be liable for charges incurred in the attempt to collect this debt in addition to legal interest charges as outlined in the paperwork she signed at the time of service.
Please phone our office if we can be of further assistance.
Thank you,
Melinda B[redacted]
