My story is a unique one. This winter, my mother moved in with me from RI to my NJ condo. She's 88 and I'm 50. Well, Spring came around we decided enough was enough and we were going to move to Florida. I got laid off, which was fine with me, my unemployment benefit supported us fine as I lived below my means when I was employed. We found a place that worked for us in FL in the Spring but were wait listed. Finally got a September 15 move in date and that's when I began to research moving companies. And wow, I think when my move is complete I will write a book about the unscrupulous practices in the moving industry.
But today I had a positive, educational and extremely informative conversation with Jeff, the owner of Classic Moving of Tom's River, NJ. He said he couldn't make the run to Florida in September when I needed to go, BUT he proceeded to spend 30 minutes on the phone with me advising me about questions to ask potential movers, explained insurance options that are industry standards, explained the formulas moving companies use for various calculations. HE WAS SINGULARLY THE MOST HELPFUL PERSON IN THE MOVING INDUSTRY I HAVE SPOKEN TO.
I must also add the my brother is paying for my mother and I to move to FL and told me to get a dozen quotes. Well, I am up to at least 25 estimates with follow up interviews. And I say interviews, because I have learned so much since starting to look for a mover in July. The moving industry is full of very bad people - Jeff from Classic Moving is NOT one of those. He is one of the good guys. He couldn't have been more candid with me. When my move is complete I will be writing an e-book about the process. Most important tip of all - DO YOUR HOMEWORK. There are oodles of resources out there to find out the background of companies.
Moving an elderly family member has challenges. When the 2016 snowstorm separated me from the process by hundreds of miles, Jeff, Sue, and staff met every challenge and had contingencies for these hurdles. Friendly and flexible, family oriented, my mothers move could not have been in better hands.
