Complainant came in and said she had a heating problem and that she had used another mechanic in the area with unsatisfary repair, that we had came highly recommended, would we check her car out We made an appointment for March 19, The engine light was on when we put it on our
Engine and cooling system analyzer We told her she had been running the car with electric radiator fans not working and definetly had a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked head, and if the head was crack it would be cheaper for her to install a motor, because she had almost 190,miles on this motor and the water pump is leaking and it is also due for a timing belt and the radiator also needs to be replaced She asked me if I could get it running so she could trade it in She didn't want a head gasket or water pump
She told me to go ahead and put *** Special Head Gasket and Block Sealer I told her we had good luck with it , but I didn't know what had been done to it from the other mechanic and she didn't know or was unwilling to share the information with me I told her she had already ran it really hot and that was the wrong thing to do I also told her that I could not guarantee that this would work
All repairs were discussed and ok'ed by her She said she would pick up car and trade it for a Honda CivicA week later she came back and said the car was running so good that she had decided to drive it alittle while longer I told her that might be alright but the head gasket could go out at any time, completely
I wrote on her receipt that there was no guarantee on the leaks and that she may need a timing belt and water pump soon She has a copy of this
We have been in business since and have always been up front and honest with our customers

Review: Please see my complaint about [redacted] located in Fishersville, Va concerning my 2003 Honda Civic. March 14, 2014 car smelled bad and after I returned to car it would not start. Since I had a bad experience with [redacted] I knew I had to change mechanics. I had appointment with Coffey's on Monday March 17 to see why this engine light was on. When my car had to be towed by [redacted] I had them take it to Coffey's where I had made appointment. My car stayed at Coffey's for 18 days. Search my cellular phone records and Coffey's never once called me about my car. I called them numerous times about what was wrong. Finally when I called them on Thursday, March 20 [redacted] told me I knew a radiator and the cost would be $400.00. I told him go ahead and replace radiator because radiator was the original one. Between March 20th and the day I picked up car he would talk about flushing something and sealing something. I remember he told me almost had lost car. On March 3 when I picked up car I owed him $980.00. he never told me about what he was doing and the cost involved. He was paid by credit card but engine light was still on. The car was dripping light dark fluid and I placed cardboard under the car to see how much liquid was being lost. [redacted] checked car several times and said he would keep a watch on car. The car was inspected safe to drive and he installed a thermostat because I had not had any warm heat for awhile. Two days before I drove to Richmond, Va. [redacted] checked my car and I paid him another $16.00. At rest area on I 64 I pulled car off and car was overheated. Steam was coming out of hood and I was terrified that I was going to be blown up. Again I spoke to [redacted] and told him that car was being towed to garage. I am so mad at being taken advantage of. [redacted] and Coffey's Garage are responsible for everything I have gone through since Feb. 22, 2014. [redacted] told me my car was worth $250 but he still tried to get $100 out of me for radiator fluid. Please help .Desired Settlement: My car to be repaired like it should have been in the first place. The car is now in the Richmond area and the mechanic told me I needed a engine costing $1,700.00. I learned about needing a engine by this mechanic. Coffey's never told me a thing about the engine. Somehow I did know about a head gasket and that is all I understand about what a head gasket is. If my car was so sick Coffey's should have told me so I could make choices what I wanted to do with my car.

Response:

Complainant came in and said she had a heating problem and that she had used another mechanic in the area with unsatisfary repair, that we had came highly recommended, would we check her car out. We made an appointment for March 19, 2014. The engine light was on when we put it on our Engine and cooling system analyzer. We told her she had been running the car with electric radiator fans not working and definetly had a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked head, and if the head was crack it would be cheaper for her to install a motor, because she had almost 190,000 miles on this motor and the water pump is leaking and it is also due for a timing belt and the radiator also needs to be replaced. She asked me if I could get it running so she could trade it in. She didn't want a head gasket or water pump.

She told me to go ahead and put [redacted] Special Head Gasket and Block Sealer. I told her we had good luck with it , but I didn't know what had been done to it from the other mechanic and she didn't know or was unwilling to share the information with me. I told her she had already ran it really hot and that was the wrong thing to do. I also told her that I could not guarantee that this would work.

All repairs were discussed and ok'ed by her. She said she would pick up car and trade it for a Honda Civic. A week later she came back and said the car was running so good that she had decided to drive it alittle while longer. I told her that might be alright but the head gasket could go out at any time, completely.

I wrote on her receipt that there was no guarantee on the leaks and that she may need a timing belt and water pump soon. She has a copy of this.

We have been in business since 1955 and have always been up front and honest with our customers.

I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

Regards,

I drove my car to Grottoes, Va. on Friday, March 14. I had stopped at my Mother's house and I noticed a bad smell. When I came back to my car it would not start. I called [redacted] and they sent a Towing Service. The tow person was able to start my car. I can supply my [redacted] phone records to prove that Coffey's never once called me. The only phone that I have is my cellular phone with [redacted]. I called Coffey's Garage either March 27th or March 28th and [redacted] told me that I needed a new radiator and the cost would be $400.00. I remember I thought if that would fix my problem then that is what I needed to fix my car. On one of my calls [redacted] told me that he thought he had almost lost my car but he was flushing the car. I knew about the $400.00, but I was never told how much I was going to be paying until the day I picked the car up. I will take a lie detector test about what was told me. Hopefully they will take the same test to see who is telling the truth. When my problem started with my car in February 2014 had approximately 176,500 miles on my car. Coffey's must have put the 24,000 miles on my car when it was sitting in their lot for for 18 days. I was never told anything about electric radiator fans when I called. I never was asked about a Head Gasket and the only thing I ever knew about a radiator was when I was told that would be $400.00 when I called them. [redacted] never told me that the work he did on my car would not be guaranteed. The first time I learned this was when I got the bill he had written that work was not under guarantee. My question what type of person would pay $980.00 and the work has no guarantee. That person does not have brain and I do consider myself to have a brain that functions. I did not have any heat in my car and I told [redacted] about this and he said that I needed a thermostat. I bought a new thermostat from Mr. [redacted] even passed my car's yearly inspection. If my car was so sick why would a mechanic put my life at risk? Two days before my car ran hot on my way to Richmond [redacted] checked my car and I paid him $18 for doing something. When my car ran hot at the first rest area on I 64 on my way to Richmond I could have been blown up to small pieces. I was scared to death and steam was coming out of my hood. At the very end [redacted] told me that my car was worth $250.00. but Mr [redacted] was still trying to get me out of more money. [redacted] told me he would check with whoever he bought the radiator and to see if they would give me a different one. Mr. [redacted] did say something that the radiator was not the problem, but if they gave me a different radiator he would not charge for installation , but he would charge $100.00 for the fluid. I had the car towed to a mechanic in the Richmond area. This was the first mechanic that told me that my car needed a engine.

There is more to tell about my experience with Coffey's Garage and I want to tell my story in a small claims court. I really do not know what a small claim court is, but I want to testify so lots more people know the truth.

Going to Coffey's has been such a terrible experience. One way or another the truth is going to come out. Per [redacted] you have been in business since 1955, but I promise you I will do everything I can to make sure the truth is known to the public about how I was treated. I have always wanted to be on television.
