Complaint ID ***The following is my side, pertaining to this complaint and complainant.Facts:On or about Wednesday, June 15, I received a voice message from *** ** asking me to call himAfter playing telephone tag for a while I connected with *** ** and set up an appointment to visit his
jobsite (home)As requested, I took pictures of door samples with me to give him an idea of the different styles available. After discussing with *** **, what he was looking for, and listening to him emphasize that he had been laid off from his oilfield job and was living on a fixed incomeI took measurements and presented him with a hastily calculated estimate of $3,for cabinets which included; building, painting, removal of existing cabinets and installing the lower bases including a pantry, and upper wall hung cabinets.Upon presenting him with this estimate, he asked if I was going to be installing the same type of (plastic laminate) countertops that were on the existing cabinetsI told him that I could if that was what he wanted, but there would be an additional charge for countertopsHe seemed somewhat perplexed, and stated that he thought the countertops were included in the estimateI explained the price quoted to him only included the cabinet boxes, doors and drawersEverything else was an additional cost because many people have granite countertops installed and I do not work with graniteSomewhat irritated, he asked how much more the countertop was going to set him back.I asked if he was set on plastic laminate for counter top material to which he said he wanted something niceI asked if he would be interested in a butcher block style wood countertop, and indicated that I could add the counter top for an additional $This would bring the estimate to $4,000.00.The next inquiry made, pertained to how busy I was and how quickly I could finish the jobHe indicated that his girlfriend (wife to be) and her daughter would be in town on July 8, for a competition her daughter was participating in and he wanted the job to be finished by the time they arrivedTo the desired completion date, only three weeks out, I cringed, and informed him that I had started and was currently working on a rather large job in PortlandI let him know the job would probably be placed on hold shortly, pending answers from the owner and their electrician, pertaining to several electrical issues in the kitchenI informed him that I could get started on his job at that time but when the electrical issues were resolved I would have to pull off his job and jump back on the Portland job, to get it finished.Just for reference purposes- Lowes and Home Depot timeframes for kitchen cabinet work Design of cabinets, 1-weeks.Delivery of cabinets after design phase, 4-weeks.Installation time after delivery, approximately week.Design, construct, deliver and install countertops, 1-weeks.Basically, you would be looking at about two to three months from start to finish with one of these big box locations. He then informed me that as long as progress could be seen during her visit, he could live with thatHe further informed me that after she left he wasn't going to be in such a hurry and really didn't care if it took a month or so to complete as long as it was completed and looked good.During this initial visit I emphasized that to reduce the length of time that a customer's kitchen was out of commission, I preferred to wait until I had completed the cabinets before performing a tear-out.On the Thursday, June 16, 2016, submitted a 3-D drawing to *** **, via emailIn this email I indicated that we did not discuss, (materials or money), what he wanted to do pertaining to the above counter back-splashTo this comment *** **, again responded, "I thought it was included if not what are the proposals and, ideas, costs?"To this I indicated, "Looking at Home Depot or Lowes prices if you went with a type of tile back-splash from counter-top to bottom of the upper cabinets, covering the area currently covered by the Formica, the materials alone would cost somewhere between $800-$1,Labor would run somewhere in between $300-$500."I further indicated that, "If you want to go with a simple, low cost option, I could build and install a counter-top matching, wood back-splash finished with poly urethane for about $The drawback is, this style of back-splash would only be 6" wide and would not cover the entire wall surface; but would suffice, as most commercially available back-splashes preformed with a counter-top, such as those you can purchase from the big box stores, are only 4" tall."He responded, and I quote, "Well sir I think I told you I was a laid off old Vet that's living on afixed income now this is a bit of surprise when we start adding 25% or so to the intended workI REALLY wish this had been discussed yesterday when speaking of the work and the back splash etcheard yesterday that it would cost me no more than I think you know that when you use numbers those stick in the client's mindnow we are somewhere around if we go with the low cost solution and quite a bit more if we went with the full coverage methodI will ask againsend me a pic of the butcher block how it will lookthe intended color of the cabinetsI will send this onI can tell you for sure I am NOT spending another 1500-for a back splash....what is the proposal for the area behind the stovesounds like now that I will have to take care of that."I agreed to provide the short backsplash for no extra.I delivered a contract to *** ** on Thursday, June 16, and picked up a deposit check for 50% of the totalBeing Thursday evening I was not able to place an order for the door materials to be delivered on FridayMaterials were delivered the following Friday, June 24, 2016.On Monday, June 20, 2016, I received a text from *** ** stating he had removed everything from the cabinets and asked when we would be tearing the old cabinets outI told him again, that I preferred to wait until my cabinets were built to avoid disruption, but at his request and as he had already disrupted his kitchen, I told him I would get somebody out to remove the old cabinets on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.Upon removal of the old cabinets we discovered that the floor had a rotted location and the wall behind the cabinets needed some repairAt MrS's request and approval, we placed concrete board on the floor and walls and modified the plumbing behind the sink. The Portland job was placed on hold on Wednesday, June 21, 2016, and shop work was started on MrS's cabinets on Monday, June 27, after receipt of materials from supplier on Friday, June 23, 2016.By the date *** ** had wanted the job complete, July 8, 2016, we had delivered and installed the upper cabinetsOn July 18, 2016, I submitted an email to *** ** letting him know the issues on the Portland job had been cleared upI told him that I would be pulling off his job to get back on the Portland jobI told him before I pulled off I would deliver and install the upper doors and shelves on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, and the lower cabinets would be delivered and installed the following day.Upon arrival at the jobsite I was met by an irritated customer whom demanded that I finish his job before pulling offIn all the years of dealing with customers I had never experienced such use of profanityHe proceeded to inform me that we had a contract and I needed to honor that contractI told him I also had a contract with the customer in Portland, that their contract was entered into first and that I had told him up front that I had a prior commitment to complete their job after problems were resolvedHe basically told me he didn't give a "f _ _ _" about the other contract and told me if I would give him their phone number he would call and tell them soI apologized to him but reiterated the prior conversation pertaining to this potential problemThe level of his anger disturbed me.We returned later that week to install the lower cabinets*** ** in an irritated state said that he was most bothered by having to access water for his coffee maker from the bathroomI told him I would fix that problem the next day before I pulled offHe said that he wouldn't be in town but that his step-son would meet us at the houseI got to the house about 5:PM and proceeded to set up the kitchen sink in a temporary fashion for useHe made a call to his step-son during my visit to check up on my progressHis step-son handed me the phone to which I received an earful of angrily spouted profane languageHe asked if I had come all the way out only to installa "f " sink, to which I responded "yes sir, that is exactly what I did." I told him I was trying to alleviate his coffee water problemHe then started in on me, telling me he would be back in town Friday evening and he expected me to have the job completed by the time he returnedI told him that it wasn't going to happen by that weekend, because as I had already told him, I had temporarily pulled off his job and was currently working on the Portland jobI told him I would get back in touch with him later, to inform him as to when I would be back on hisjobHe ended the conversation by telling me to take the "f " sink back to the shop with me when I leaveBecause I was almost finished with the temporary installation I asked the step-son if I could just go ahead and finishHe told me that if I did it would only irritate *** ** moreI disassembled everything and returned to the shop.*** ** unexpectedly appeared at my front door demanding, I return his knobs and sink, those which he had sent back to the shop with meDuring the next day, I contemplated whether I wished to finish MrSmiley's job or end it and take a lossI decided I did not need the undue stress being generated from this customerI submitted an email to him along with an itemized accounting of the items completed as of that date, (copy included with this response)In this email I also indicated that I would ship the remaining lower doors, their hinges and mounting screws to his house the following week.As I indicated in my email I was willing to accept a loss, to end the business relationship I had with him.I must say, in years of doing this type of business, and as displayed in his complaint this customer has to take the title for being the most unreasonable and rudest customer I have ever dealt withI walk away losing money and he files a complaint. From reading the complaint, I found the customer makes it sound as if I had only built and installed the upper cabinets without doorsHe fails to indicate that all the lower cabinets had been installed and with the exception of two small cabinets, one to the right of the kitchen window and one for a microwave, all the upper cabinets had been installedIn other words approximately twenty-seven (27) linear feet of upper and/or lower cabinets, including shelving and doors were provided. The customer indicated he was told by his second contractor that our cabinets were not built to standardFor the record, our cabinets are built to the accepted industry standards, bases are built 34.5" in height, 24" in depth with a x toe kick, uppers are built 12" in depthThere are no standard widths. As for the alleged bad paint job, we spray our cabinet components with two (2) coats of lacquer primer and two-three (2-3) top coats of pigmented lacquerPaint finish is sanded after final primer coat, prior to finish coating. As the man clearly demonstrates in his disparaging remarks pertaining to my employees, he was not somebody with whom I wanted to continue doing business withI felt this and his other actions in the entirety of the situation, made it worth taking a loss to end the business relationship. The final comment in his complaint pertained to the amount of money the second contractor thought I had invested in the jobThis figure was placed at $1,(maybe) by the second contractorFor reference purpose, I have included a two page printout of a shopping cart of one of the many cabinet manufacturers located on lineThis shopping cart lists fifteen (15) doors. The quantity, sizes and finish are representative of the quantity, sizes and finish of the doors provided on the job under complaintThe value of the fifteen (15) doors alone amounts to $1,This amount is very comparable to what a local door shop would charge.Thank you for allowing me to respond, ***
