Ms. [redacted] presented to our office on April 28th, 2016 with a tooth ache. Upon an intraoral exam, it was clear that Ms. [redacted] needed dental treatment. She came back on the 29th, we addressed her chief complaint from the day before by performing the needed treatment, and we relieved her of...

pain. Ms. [redacted] made a subsequent appointment in order to continue her treatment. She came in, we discussed her benefits, and we clearly and unambiguously explained that she had enough benefits under her Dentaquest plan to finish fixing one of the cavities she had if she did not want to incur any out-of-pocket costs. She suddenly became very upset that we had not called her ahead of time to inform her of this. She stated, “Why are you treating me like a second class citizen? Is it because I now have Medicaid?” She proceeded to call my front office staff by a racial slur: [redacted]. Racial slurs are never appropriate, and certainly not acceptable in a professional office. I calmly explained to her that her Medicaid benefits, managed by Dentaquest, were limited. As a courtesy to our patients, our office does the utmost to maximize the benefits available to our patients while keeping their costs at a minimum. Every patient that completes our intake forms know that any out-of-pocket costs outside of their benefits are their responsibility. That is why the financial responsibility form is signed by all the patients that come to our office. A patient’s oral health is our utmost concern as dental professionals. Yet, Ms. [redacted] left upset about this. She does not owe any money as all treatment under the $1000 fiscal year benefit is covered under Medicaid. We are not sure what billing issues are unresolved. As for her request to have her treatment finished, we applaud her efforts, but any treatment that exceeds the $1000 fiscal year benefit under Medicaid becomes an out-of-pocket expense that is fully the responsibility of the patient. Again, this was explained to her, and in addition, we explained to her that her Medicaid benefits would renew July 1st, and that she was more than welcome to wait until that date in order to continue treatment while minimizing her out-of-pocket costs. Even at the end of our exhaustive explanation of her benefits, Ms. [redacted] was still upset because she did not understand her Medicaid benefits. I would need to know more details from Ms. [redacted] in order to understand her billing issues. We are not sure what she is disputing regarding her $1000 benefits? We treated her with respect, and billed Medicaid for the services. As stated above, to finish her treatment she would need to pay out of pocket for anything once her Medicaid benefits are used in full or she could wait for July 1st for her Medicaid benefits to start over. Due to her rudeness to our staff, Ms. [redacted] will need to find another dental office for any future treatment as we will not treat her anymore. As I tried to speak to her she was being very unreasonable and rude. It was a simple issue of her not understanding her benefits. This could have been resolved very easily once everything was explained. We could have completed one other filling, and then she could have either paid to finish her treatment or waited until July 1st. Ms. [redacted] blew the whole situation out of proportion and got overly upset and very rude. With the use of her racial slur [redacted] directed at my front staff, we simply cannot see her in our office again. There are plenty of dental offices around the area that accept Medicaid who would be happy to treat her. If she would like a copy showing all her treatment that was completed and billed, we would be happy to comply.
