Complete Accessible Ready Environments Reviews (1)

Thank you for contacting our company with regards to the complaint notice.  We welcome the opportunity to share the details of our...

dealings with this homeowner and to explain why their claims are unfounded.
As noted, we were contracted to construct a handicap accessible bathroom in their home.  The  contract was through the State of Wisconsin funded agency called IRIS, who paid for the entire project.  The project included a barrier free style shower with safety features, replacement of all wall surfacing in the room, a new toilet, a new sink and new tiled flooring.
Upon completion of every project done through IRIS, an IRIS representative contacts the homeowner to ask if they are satisfied with the work before issuing payment to the contactor.  Since we were paid without delay, the assumption can obviously be made that the homeowner acknowledged the workmanship was up to their standards.  The IRIS consultant that visited their home was also pleased with the work.
Per the complaint, the homeowner had trouble with water shedding onto the main bathroom floor, and some cracking along a line of grout between floor tiles.  As the name “barrier free” suggests, there is no barrier between the shower floor and main floor, allowing for easy step in or wheelchair access.  So, it is to be expected that there can be some watershed onto the outside floor from time to time.  However, to help limit this, we went back and installed a rubber barrier at the edge of the shower called a WaterStopper™, (at no charge to the homeowner), which is designed to alleviate watershed. (Please see attached photo).  We have used the this many times and have no complaints from others about further watershed.  The shower pan installed is designed specifically for this application, with a 4 degree pitch from all outside edges and corners towards the drain.  We have also used this pan at other sites without issue.  The conclusion by both IRIS and ourselves is that they are likely directing the water from the sprayer towards the shower curtain too heavily, and/or bumping the curtain while showering and allowing it to hang outside the WaterStopper™.  IRIS saw no problem with the setup and recommended the homeowner put a non-slip mat outside the shower for safety.  When we asked during later visits if there was still an issue with watershed, the homeowner replied, “No, everything is fine now.”  As for water making its way across the bathroom floor, that is due to a severe angle to the floor that existed prior to our work.  We were unable to correct this, as it would have either required a 2 ½” height difference between the bathroom floor and adjacent floor, (thus making the bathroom anything but barrier free), or we would have had to cut into the floor joists, which is not allowable by code.  This was explained to IRIS, as well as the homeowner, and we were given permission to proceed.  The angled floor is an unfortunate side effect of the home being 70 years old and settling steadily over time.  The homeowner states “the structural problems didn’t exist prior to the remodel”, but that is blatantly untrue.  Since there was a shower over a standard bathtub previously, they of course did not have water going across the angled floor at that time.  Now that a barrier free shower has been put in place and they are allowing water to exit the shower area, the angle of the floor of course becomes significantly more evident.
In regards to the cracked grout - As noted, we made an initial repair, but the crack returned a short time later.  When grout cracks continually along a line in a floor that has a new, properly installed subfloor beneath it, the reason is simple – the underlying floor joist is weak and not properly supporting the area. This is not something that can be predetermined, and was not caused by our work as we made no alterations to the floor joists.  It is again, simply due to the age of the home.  Although there was no liability on our part, we still gladly offered to help them with the situation, because we always want to keep our clients happy.  We asked them to purchase a jack post from a local store (under $30 retail), and offered our labor to install the post and do a second repair on the grout at no cost to them.  IRIS agreed the post was needed and indicated to the homeowner that it was their responsibility, but the homeowner refused to make the purchase.  It was not until months later, after allowing the problem to grow considerably while they argued with our company and IRIS over a $30 post, that they finally gave in and said they would make the purchase.  However, because they chose to embark on an unwarranted campaign against our company (complaining to anyone they could – including you at the Revdex.com), and because they allowed the problem to get significantly worse, requiring much more labor and materials to repair it now, we respectfully rescinded our offer to help them with the issue, with IRIS’ full blessing.
We’re dumbfounded that they have made defamatory remarks about our company, despite the fact that they received a “free” beautiful bathroom with numerous extras from us during the project that were not included in the contract.  (A full list of extras can be provided upon request).  We have an outstanding track record within the community, with zero other complaints to be found and we are strongly considering a liable/slander suit against this homeowner to keep our record clean, should they decide to continue on this path.
Finally, an interesting question was brought up by IRIS themselves:   If they thought our company somehow provided subpar workmanship and service, why then did they also choose our company to build their exterior wooden wheelchair ramp, almost 3 months after finishing the “supposedly flawed” bathroom project?
If we can be of any more service or answer more questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help.  As of now, we believe we have shed proper light on the reasons their issues exist, that their complaints are unwarranted, and we consider this matter closed.
Sincerely,
[redacted] – Owner
