Complete Mobile Repair LLC Reviews (1)

I contacted [redacted], owner of Complete Mobile Boat Repair, for a very simple boat lift repair in Winter Park, FL. When I say "repair", the lift was running but it was loud and somewhat rough - I told him over the phone it probably just needed a lube and service (call it an "annual service" if you will), but if it was broken and needed repair to go ahead and fix it.

The week of the scheduled service came and went - no show, no call. The following week I called again and [redacted] apologized saying they'd been very busy and would have a tech out the following day. I told him I would not be home but to go ahead and have the tech enter through the gate and walk down to the dock/lift for the service.

The following day, the service was performed and an invoice was left in the amount of $466 - consisting of $93 for a service call, a $93 "diagnoses", and a $280 "service". When I saw the invoice I was initially ok with it - I figured the lift must have needed more extensive repair than the simple lube + service I was hoping for. However, after reviewing the history of the gate sensor on my alarm.com app as well as my security cameras, I was surprised to see the tech was there for only 30 minutes, his truck pulling up to my street at 11:09am and departing at 11:39am, with less than 20 minutes spent down by the boat lift and the remainder spent standing by his truck, walking around the neighbors' yard etc. No parts charges were listed on the invoice. I walked down to the dock and the lift did operate without the squeaking noise and the only noticeable repair that had been done was lube (grease on the gear, exactly what I had thought it needed and had communicated over the phone). So I appeared to have been charged $466 for a "service" consisting of at most 30 minutes labor and no parts, essentially a lube job.

That evening around 5:30pm [redacted] sent me a text asking me to leave a check the following morning. I said that would be fine, and asked if $466 was his normal rate for a service and lube job. [redacted] replied that the labor rate was $93 an hour, that the lift required "adjustments" in addition to lube, and that the tech was there "every bit of two hours". Without mentioning I knew he was lying, I asked how does two hours at $93/hr add up to $466? He replied that if I wasn't happy he would subtract $75 from the bill, saying he would "eat" that for me as if he was offering me a big favor.

$466 minus $75 is $391. [redacted]'s fictional two hours labor at $93/hr would be $186, adding in the $93 service call charge, which every other repair service I have ever dealt with applies to the first hour labor, adds to $279. Pointing out this discrepancy seemed to weigh on [redacted]'s patience, resulting in a reply that I was the first customer who had ever complained about his pricing and adding that most of his customers are "football players, basketball players, and medical doctors." I'm not sure why [redacted] felt this information was relevant other than to imply I was being cheap or I'm not good enough to afford his services.

At this point, I sent [redacted] a screenshot of my alarm.com app showing that he was clearly lying about "every bit of two hours," and that in fact I was charged $466 for 30 minutes of labor representing an hourly labor rate of $932/hr. [redacted] then backtracked and said his tech had opted not to charge me by the hour but instead charged a flat rate. I'm not sure how this "flat rate" was determined but this goes to my original question for which I never received an answer - is $466 the normal rate for a very simple service/lube? Pulling up the website in search of an answer proved as fruitless as asking the owner, as the "price list" link does not work. http://www.completemobileboatrepair.com/# I can't say that I blame him for this omission, as advertising $466 for a lube job might negatively impact his business.

In the end after being confronted with his dishonestly, [redacted] did say "you know what, just mail me a check for whatever you think is fair." I find this an inadequate and patronizing response - I pay as invoiced, why didn't he invoice me what was fair/honest even when given a second chance to do so? Otherwise why couldn't he explain in plain English how he came to that figure without resorting to 2 x $93 = $466, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt before asking and half expected his answer to be that a part was replaced.

The following day I did mail [redacted] a check for the full $466. I am not contesting the bill via Revdex.com and I am not asking for a refund of any kind. At no time did I indicate I did not intend to pay as invoiced, I simply wanted to give [redacted] the opportunity to either review his figure, which appeared to me to have been reached in error, or give the honest answer that yes, $466 is his normal rate for a 20 minute lube job. [redacted] chose a different course - lie, backtrack, then patronize. I do not do business with people like [redacted] as a matter of principal and I will not call him for future boat or boat lift repairs regardless of price. I hope this review helps other central FL boaters who may not play basketball for a living (and maybe even some who do) determine whether [redacted]'s Complete Mobile Boat Repair lives up to their own standards of integrity and business ethics and choose whether to do business with him accordingly.
