We have been a customer with MAR-VON since October 7, 2013 and continue to be pleased with their product and service. [redacted] has been our technician every quarter and he has been professional and friendly. [redacted] understands MAR-VON products and is definitely an asset to his company. He always answers questions politely and we look forward to seeing him every quarter. We plan on continuing our business relationship with this company.

We just became new customers in May of 2015. We decided to go with Mar-Von over the other pest control companies because of the consultation with [redacted] and his knowledge. We have a large unfinished basement (the kind you can stand in) and treating this vast space was no easy task. Once we learned about termites, pests, and bug challenges from [redacted] it was finally time to decide which company would do the service. When I phoned [redacted] to tell him that we wanted to move forward with the service, Mar-Von exterminators arrived the next morning. They did an excellent job. Mar-Von is Courteous, Professional, and Caring. We will continue to rely on their services and highly recommend them.

Review: I purchased a [redacted] 10 lap Top computer in February. This is my third computer the other two were desk top and my first one was purchased in 2000. I found this lap top very difficult to learn and I found in the yellow pages a Computer Learning Center and the man is a sole owner of the business and his name is [redacted]. But he did not give me his address but said he would come to my home. His phone number is [redacted] He was always late because he worked part time for a retail religious store at the Chico Mall. He told me that for $190.00 he would come to my house six times for a total of 6 hours = once a week and he wanted paid before he started of which I found unusual. I paid him but the second week he went on a vacation to the Carrabean Islands. He talked a lot about other things. He walked around and took pictures of my paintings on the walls without asking permission. At the end he suggested I do another 6 hours and I refused to give him another $190.00 and he said he would so the 6 hours for $150.00 and I agreed simply because I had not learned enough. After 4 days, I called him and asked him to send my check back to me because I have decided not to do another 6 hours and he immediately told me he couldn’t return my check to me because he had bills to pay. I was shocked and I began to argue with him and in all my 86 years I had never experienced anything like this. This is why I am writing to you for your help on one of his trips to my house, he asked me if I knew of the institution called [redacted] which is run by retired professors and retired teachers. It is connected to the Chico State College here in Chico. About 75 retired teachers rent small office spaces and we seniors about 400 of us pay them about $300.00 a year to learn so many different things. I told him that I belonged and he said he has about 38 people there at a church “room” to teach the computer. I attended three Mondays in a row for 2 hours but he was teaching windows 7 and the bookkeeping part on the computer. I quit going because again it wasn’t what I wanted to learn. I really feel that this man is a “con-artist”.Desired Settlement: I hope you can convince him to pay me $150.00. Thank you.

Response:

I purchased a [redacted] 10 lap Top computer in February. This is my third computer the other two were desk top and my first one was purchased in 2000.. I found this lap top very difficult to learn and I found in the yellow pages a Computer Learning Center and the man is a sole owner of the business and his name is Lon Halley. But he did not give me his address but said he would come to my home. The majority of my computer training is conducted at the clients home as a convenience to them. I provided a business card with an address during the first training session. His phone number is [redacted].He was always late because he worked part time for a retail religious store at the Chico Mall. There were several times (not always) I was running behind my scheduled arrival but always called ahead with an apology and to indicate my arrival. I would express my appreciation for her patience. I was never more than 10 to 15 minutes behind schedule. I do work part-time at [redacted] in the Chico Mall but that had no impact on my arrival time. What I said was that I always receive my schedule at the last minute and at times have to reschedule an appointment that ends up conflicting with my work schedule. However, our appointments were always in the morning and I don’t recall any times our appointment needed to be rescheduled. He told me that for $190.00 he would come to my house six times for a total of 6 hours = once a week and he wanted paid before he started of which I found unusual. It is not unusual for any educational institution to have services paid prior to the commencements of the educational services. Students must make financial arraignments before they can begin attending classes. All community college and state universities adhere to this practice. To the contrary, it would be very unusual for a student to attend without making financial arrangements prior to be allowed to attend class. I have always followed this practice since 2003 unless a financial hardship exist then I arrange a payment plan to help the client. What was failed to be mentioned is that I also give 1.5 hours free training to potential customers as a means to experience my style of training before agreeing to a bank of hours that I discount from 35% to 50% off my regular rate of $65 per hour (A price sheet was given to her showing the package options). I included the 1.5 hours in this agreement with her. My lowest package is for 9 hours at a 35% discount. That is $380 for 9 hours of training(9 x $65 =$585 less a 35% discount of $205 = $380). However, she felt she did not need that many hours so I cut in half the number of hours to 4.5 hours for $190.00 and included the 1.5 hours free training as a bonus for a total of 6 hours. I paid him but the second week he went on a vacation to the Carrabean Islands.I was not on vacation. I went to Cancun, Mexico, not the Caribbean Islands, to work with orphans and widows for a week. This had been planned for months. I mentioned this the first day we met. I never attended any resorts in Cancun but worked in the poverty and low income areas. We also poured a concrete slap all by manual methods. No vacation I can assure you. I was completely open about my schedule. She mentioned no concerns about this at the time.He talked a lot about other things. He walked around and took pictures of my paintings on the walls without asking permission. This is absolutely false. I asked permission before taking a picture. She gave me permission and took time to explain to me why she liked the quote. At the end he suggested I do another 6 hours and I refused to give him another $190.00 and he said he would so the 6 hours for $150.00 and I agreed simply because I had not learned enough.Clients have different learning curves. In addition, there was more learning that she definitely would benefit from so I offered more training at another discount ($50 off of the $190). I was being very generous with this client to help met her computer training needs. Actually, the offer was only 4.5 hours since it did not include the 1.5 hour free training a second time. The training was content rich. Her major needs were met. However, I had to repeat the material often in order for her to remember the lesson content. After 4 days, I called him and asked him to send my check back to me because I have decided not to do another 6 hours and he immediately told me he couldn’t return my check to me because he had bills to pay. I was shocked and I began to argue with him and in all my 86 years I had never experienced anything like this.I allow 72 hours ( which I believe is state law) for a client to request a refund. As she mentioned, 4 DAYS had past. I was trying to explain that after a full 4 DAYS I have used the money for my own expenses. As a small business, it becomes very difficult to provide refunds beyond 72 hours(3 days). If it had been within the 72 hours not 4 DAYS I would have provided a refund. It has often been my experience that clients talk to family members and/or friends who convince them that they don’t need this “expensive” training. They often offer to help the client themselves. I am suspicious that this might have occurred here. However, I’m only speculating. I have no proof. I attended three Mondays in a row for 2 hours but he was teaching [redacted] 7 and the bookkeeping part on the computer. I quit going because again it wasn’t what I wanted to learn. I really feel that this man is a “con-artist”.It is correct that there is a program at Chico State for senior citizens(Osher Lifelong Learning Institute - [redacted] ). I shared this as another gesture for her to receive additional training at low cost. It is my understanding that she attended my class and did not register for this specific class therefore receiving this particular class free. They pay a fee to take up to so many classes. However, students must still register for an individual class. The teachers are called “peer” leaders and teach voluntarily for no compensation. I am a peer leader. I do not rent any office space. The program seeks out community resources and facilities to conduct classes. Faith Lutheran Church offers there large room equipped with the necessary technology to teach a computer course. I bring my own laptop. I do not believe the church charges for the use of this room. The course description states the course content. It isn’t just [redacted] 7. It includes discussions of [redacted] 8.1, [redacted] 10 and MAC OS among other topics. Furthermore, bookkeeping is certainly not a part of the class at all. It is a general computing class covering some of the more important fundamentals of operating a computer. [redacted] products and operating systems are also mentioned in the course. I have a PowerPoint presentation attesting the actual content covered. My responses are an effort to clarify any misperceptions in the conducting my services to this client. I believe it to be a more accurate and factual explanation. I feel badly that she has come to feel the way she does but I have not done anything inappropriate. I, truly, was making a concerted effort to meet her computer skill needs.
