Computer World Inc. Reviews (1)

Review: On December 22, 2014, I purchased a used computer from this store as a Christmas present for me wife. I was told that this computer had been thoroughly checked and was fully operational. However, the product was defective from the moment we tried to power it up. Usually, it would not even boot up. When it did, it would frequently close or freeze programs at random. Also, though it was advertised to have a functioning sound system, the speakers were broken. Finally, among the glitches, it locked us out with a mysterious password that we did not create. So, I went to return it and asked for a full refund. The manager said their policy is to charge a 15% restocking fee on all returns. I explained that the return was not based on preference but was because the unit was faulty at the time of sale. He would not even consider this and said that the 15% was policy no matter what. I expressed confusion as to why I should pay money to return a bad product, and was only met with indifference and a repetition of their "policy." This, in my opinion, is a poor business practice and appears to be a way of making money off non-functioning equipment. There ought to be a distinction between products that are returned because of a change of mind and ones that are returned because they are defective. I would appreciate help with obtaining the full refund, if at all possible.Desired Settlement: Two things:

1.) Ideally, the $40 withheld for "restocking".

2.) A lower rating for this business with the Revdex.com.

Response:

The customer [redacted] did buy the computer on the 22 of December. He went to return it on January 14, which is 20 days later. He claimed he didn't put a password on the machine, that the machine had no sound, and that it was unusable. However, upon inspecting the machine, he had bunch of personal stuff on the desktop, the sound was working, and apparently just forgotten the password. Since he had wanted a refund, it was 15% as the machine was not defective as he had claimed. It is noted on the paperwork that if the computer is returned within 30 days for defective, then there would be no restocking fee. However, this was not the case as the computer worked fine, just forgotten the password, which we offered to remove for free.
