On August 18th my husband alerted me that the water in our home was no longer getting hotWe started to check the hot water heater and other things around the house We are new to the area, so I decided to phone the water company because I thought that the gas was attached to either the water or electrical companyWe called the water company and were advised we needed to contact the HOA of our neighborhood, they were the ones charging usWe made several phone calls and finally reached someone on the HOA that explained the gas is actually a separate bill Our real estate agents nor did the previous owner pass this information along to usWe called Virginia Natural Gas and explained that we were shocked and confused and just wanted to get everything straight so our gas would be turned back on Unfortunately, the person we spoke to was unsympathetic to our situation and it almost felt like she was blaming usShe stated that the owner called in to check on the account sometime in July and then cut it off on August 9thShe stated "She is not sure where the communication failed, but the owner did her part"Had we been informed we would have most definitely called to turn the gas on Also, I questioned why wouldn't anyone contact me and she very rudely pointed out that no one had our number because we didn't set up an accountWell of course I know thatBut I would imagine the gas company does in fact know we are using gas and would know our address, so why wouldn't the company mail something giving us some type of notice to start an account Furthermore, there was not even a notice on our door alerting us to the fact the gas was turned offWe would have called immediately had we knownWhy would we not want to start service for a house we just bought?? The representative advised us that it would not be cut on for hoursI told her that it wasn't even our fault we were unaware is there anyway we can do it today and I am months pregnant tooShe said the only thing she could do was put us on a wait list I just find it absurd that a company would come and turn off the gas and not put some type of notice on the door or send something in the mailWe are new to Virginia and previously our gas was attached to our electric bill and water bill in another placeI felt like the rep didn't believe what I told her, but the real estate agent never advised us that the gas was separate and I am not sure why the owner would not convey that someone new was living in the home when she called about cutting off her service so that the gas company could mail us a notice to start service I am also upset there was no notice on the doorI feel like when the previous owner called and advised to have the gas turned off that representative felt that it was unnecessary to mail something to the new owners and that we were apparently thought it was okay to not set up an account! If a person is new to the area they may not be aware that the gas is separate so when the previous owner called it would have been nice for that rep to at least inquire about what to do if the new owners have not set up an account instead of allowing it to be shut off
