7/18/16 First I think it appropriate to get history on this particular building, client history and what the challenges were on this particular job.  Several years ago Bond Plumbing worked on the sewer line that is shared by a total of one commercial space and two households. This line...

has an annual history of roots growing into the line as a lot of it is clay tile, which is known to attract tree roots. This line goes across the street and dives down about 12 feet or more to the main sewer. Town of Taos made it clear they would want to see all lines separate to each building as it enters the sewer.  This would be a very expensive line to replace as it crosses the main highway in Taos.  When we were called, I was made aware by my Staff that this particular client has a very poor payment history and that after several years the previous owner settled for a painting worth about the amount owed knowing he would not get paid otherwise, he is willing to testify as such. Staff advice was to pass on this job due to this history of non-payment of services rendered. I chose not to because [redacted]’s Mom was recently widowed, I knew [redacted]’s father and I felt appropriate to give things a chance, so I pulled workers from another job and gave this one priority.  [redacted]’s Mom gave us a check for $1000.00, next day or so the check was charged back due to insufficient funds. After this was communicated to [redacted] we received a money order to replace part of the check that was returned after we started work. I dispatched two men to snake the sewer line, one of them had mentioned that it was a historically difficult line to clean because the system was not installed to code.  When my crew arrived, sewage was flowing out into the street; the line was full of sewage, as I saw this myself. We ran the snake, hit blockage 80 or so feet and could not make the penetration though the blockage, just as [redacted]’s husband had discovered twice as I understood. We pulled the snake out with roots (pipe still full of sewage, changed tip type, ran the snake some distance and was not able to pull it out due to the system having the wrong kind of cleanout tee. Not to code.  Yes our snake got stuck, we called the Town of Taos out, and they traced the snake to the street with their equipment so, our assumption at this point had to be the snake was stuck in the direction of the street. Needless to say we wanted to get the snake out without leaving snake in the most expensive part of the system to service (State Highway road), so yes we took time in trying to get it out. The snake finally broke much to our horror, and we had to go to plan B.  We called for emergency spotting of gas, water, cable and phone lines, and response was within two hours instead of the usual 2 days. The next morning we started to dig and immediately found the gas line spots were off by 24”. This is a high pressure gas line so one does not just want to “dig away”. Also there were three water lines, phone lines and other communication lines one does not want to hit with equipment due to safety and cost. In the process of avoiding the gas line, the hole had to be larger than usual to maintain safety to my men and the surrounding community.  We did find the snake, was not going in the direction that the Town of Taos spotted and said (their equipment was set incorrectly), or our expectations of going to the street. This we could usually see by looking in the cleanouts, this was not possible on this job because of four foot of standing black sewage in the pipe. We recorded this event on the invoice, some folks would not be so honest in this reporting. I edit the invoices; I chose to leave this on because this is honest and indicates other problems that need to be addressed in the sewer system. We put our best efforts into solving the problem, so yes these are billable hours and hours spent because we were dealing with adverse conditions and cleanouts that don’t meet code. We did retrieve the snake, found very large root masses as well, and found a separated line due to two types of plastic pipe glues together and repaired the line accordingly. I also witnessed this We also added a cleanout as close to the street as practical avoiding the mass of communication lines, water meter distance and so on to meet request of Town of Taos utility department. We snaked the line again, found the same blockage that [redacted]’s husband found and we were able to make a bit of penetration through it, but not enough to feel we really got it. We knew the clog would recur but the day had ended. Yes we were called out again, snaked out the line again, and seemed to get some results. Much easier because a proper cleanout was installed closer to the street, allowing us to get more force on the clog and control on the snake. We also went back and filled the hole with delivered gravel we paid for after requesting that they call for a load of gravel they pay for, as the hole was being an impediment to many. The hole could not be properly tamped as there were no tampers available at the time we dug the hole in an emergency situation. We were able to tamp when the load of gravel arrived. Afterward I spoke to [redacted]’s husband, I did say I would work with them and this was after a 10% discount I gave. [redacted] called the office, she had told my office person that she wanted to have a conversation with me and that it was between [redacted] and me.She left a phone number that I called twice and never got a return call.  I have since received a check for $200 dollars as payment to services rendered that I am glad for from [redacted]’s Mom. I also received notice of this complaint. I would welcome a call from [redacted] or [redacted]’s Mom to resolve this bill. We strive to do the best we can with what we have available, no, Taos is not Colorado Springs or Denver where plumbers usually charge much more and resources are much greater making it easier to do a job.  Larry M[redacted], Bond Plumbing  Tell us why here...
