engine was knocking badly. We checked on a salvageengine. They werevery expensive and had only a 90 day warranty. Partsand labor were estimated to be around$5,000 to$7,000. I suggested to the customer([redacted]) that we disassemble her engine to see if it could be repaired for less money, since the miles on the car were very low.  The customer asked for an estimate, and I estimated parts and labor at $3,500. The customer agreed that we take a look. We removed the engine and disassembled it. It had extreme sludge init. Apparently, regular oil changes had not been done. It needed three
connecting rods and a crank shaft (which were not
included in the est imate). The customer agreed to the repair, but instructed us not to proceed on the work for two months because of some family problems. We
ordered parts and had machine work performed, then worked on other projects.    [redacted]'s grandmother called to check the status of the repair and seemed in a hurry for completion. We began reassembly and the job went well.We went over our estimate only on the parts.
The pistons and rods were$880. We found a broken rocker shaft and the replacement cost $198.76.There was a melted cam gear retainer
($154.50), and a broken motor mount ($130.10). In making the
estimate, we did not anticipate the need to machine the cylinder heads ($232) because of the low mileage. We
did machine the cylinder heads because of damage from the sludge and apparent neglect of
basic maintenance. Despite the additional unforeseen issues, I kept the
labor cost at the estimated level, but I had to bill for the additional parts.
To help the customer, I did not charge for the tow. I gave the  customer
a one year warranty on condition that oil changes could be verified.
