On April 9, the customers, Ms***/Mr ***, purchased a Curtis 1264-rebuilt motor controller for their John Deere eGator through our shop Against my advice they chose to install it themselves. These controllers are complex electronic devices which require diligent attention to detail during installation. A single instance of not placing the service switch in the proper position can damage the controller. In this case the controller worked for approximately months then appeared to have failed. The 1264-controller is undersized for this application and failures are common. Also, the company who supplied the rebuild service is no longer in business. I offered to research an upgrade and supplied them with a Curtis 1268-with walkaway harness. This controller was supplied at cost, $878. Again, against my advice they chose to install a complex electronic device themselves. The cart operated for a short time then failed. They then brought the cart to me for troubleshooting. Other significant issues with interlock switch circuitry and corrosion from battery acid needed to be addressed. Those items were fixed and the cart operated normally. The cart failed again a week or so later. They returned the cart to me for diagnosis. At that time I noted that the “Status” light on the controller had been poked at repeatedly with a sharp object, damaging it and making it impossible for the controller to communicate status and error codesI perfomed what troubleshooting I could, verifying the numerous interlock, selector and voltage inputs to the controller. All appeared normal. I received several lengthy emails from Ms*** with their assessment of what was wrong and how I should proceed. My replies were to the point, but never hostile. I informed them that due to performing the installation themselves and the damage to the “Status” indicator that I could not expect my supplier to honor the warranty. It became apparent that that was what was expected so I asked them to pick up their vehicle. I cannot be expected to honor a warranty when installation and testing was completely out of my control. That, along with the obvious damage due to ignorance of the function of the “Status” indicator makes it clear that the damage was due to their actions. My employee had a conversation with Mr*** who stated that he thought the “Status” light was a button. To state that I deliberately damaged the controller to cover my incompetence is libelous. Ms*** and Mr*** are wholly responsible for the damage to the controller
Sincerely,
Mark ***
