Crazy Horse Campground Reviews (3)

I'm probably one of the most conservative, rule-following, law-abiding citizens around, but the rules this place has are ridiculous! Your camper HAS to face North, you can not take coolers in the shuttle for the tube rentals, you have to purchase wrist bands (even if you're not going to participate in any activities), you can't have alcohol (even one beer) in any of their tubes...the list goes on and on. They have more rules than they do campers! And their reasoning for everything is that "it's fire code." I honestly think the campground manager and his staff just have serious control issues...they stalked us on the river, they stalked us in the campground, and they even stalked us after they threw us out. Keep in mind, I'm a conservative, business professional, and a Mom of two...I do not live on the wild side at all..in fact tubing on the Sugar River was the wild side for me. :-) Save yourself the money and camp somewhere else!

Let me start off by saying my family has been coming to Crazy Horse for over seven years. We usually booked the lower level with other long time Crazy Horse campers/family members. We always had a nice time. We are pretty low key campers. We have three kids so even though we usually camp in groups, it's all about the kids having fun. Don't get me wrong, the adults have fun too, but we all just like to have a good time and spend time with family and friends. Anyway, the last few years coming to Crazy Horse has had a very different feel to it. It no longer has that welcoming feel that attracts people. It has quite the opposite feel really. I almost get the impression they don't want campers to come. (I know it sounds strange) the staff are rude and treated us really snotty. (Except [redacted] she was really nice) We encountered problems right from the beginning. Our friends texted while we were in route and said they have been yelled at twice already. Once for their camper not facing north. Who knew? The site was plenty big enough to face what ever way they wanted it to. We were with two other campers so we wanted to respectfully face each other. We all have children and it's easier to do meals and watch the kids that way. Anyway, we pulled in and were also told the same thing. My husband was slightly irritated from them yelling at our group told the staff member to go get a manager. This is when the famous [redacted] pulled up, or as I like to call him "The Park [redacted]" Apparently, [redacted] has quite the reputation for being difficult with campers. I'm assuming he has a power trip going on. Back in the day, he was only in charge of tubers. He will circle your campsite just waiting for the campers to make a mistake or make up a rule off the top of his head to bust you at something. It's really quite strange. I felt like he could almost be in the tall weeds with binoculars spying at campers. (Not kidding) He also has a little minion that rides along with him on his golf cart. He's training them to do the same thing. It's like they see campers as trouble and go to great lengths to drive them out. Keep in mind after they charge your card they don't care. So [redacted] pulled up and demanded our camper be facing north. We tried reasoning with him momentarily but there was no reasoning. To avoid an argument we faced our camper to the north. The next day we did the one activity for the kids. That was it. One activity. Then we went tubing. When we walked up they asked us how many. I said 9, they said oh we will never fit you all in one van. They finally figure it out and we leave. Earlier, before we left my husband took a small cooler to the river landing so we could take water and soda for the kids. It was hot out. The tube ride is about two hours. We also had sunscreen, Tylenol, and 4 beers! Keep in mind this was not a cooler stuffed with beer and mixed drinks so we could get all drunk with our five children. It was the bare necessities in my book. We thought if we transported it up to the landing we would be ok. The Crazy Horse policy is no coolers in they're tubes and they will not transport them! We weren't trying to be deceptive, like I said, bare necessities! My husband grabs the tiny blue and white cooler. The staff member said um sir I can't let you do that! We all look at him and I said we just have our things in the cooler. I told him my husbands phone was in it, water, Tylenol, pop, etc. He didn't care he still said no. I asked when when they changed they're policy? We took the cooler ourselves. We were going to hold on to it. My husband always walks the river to keep the tubes going straight. You can drink what ever you want on the public river. This is just another rule Crazy Horse imposed to control the campers. We left it on shore and my husband was really mad! He eventually swam back and walked the cooler. He got nettles all over his legs. We weren't about to leave a cooler with an IPhone and other belongings in it at the shore. When we arrived at the landing to Crazy Horse Randy was waiting for us. He asked where the missing tuber was. I said the tuber you are referring to is my husband, and he walked the cooler back to our campsite. He looked at me with a half smile and said I will tell you what, you guys have 30 minutes to pack your stuff and leave our campground. I was livid. I said are you kidding me? Clearly he wasn't. I told him what I thought of him and we all went and packed up our campers. The kids were upset, the adults were mad! What were we supposed to do? I quickly thought of another campground up the road, Sweet Minihaha. We had never been there. We normally don't get kicked out of campgrounds lol.. I called told them the situation. They were so accommodation to us. They set us all up together for $25 water/electric! We paid $174 for two days/family of 5 at Crazy Horse. Long story short, Sweet Minihaha was inviting and friendly to us! Great weekend after all! Thanks Sweet Minihaha!
