twenty-one years ago.  Many CPW customers in Laurens are receiving usually high utility bills. This is because it’s been extremely cold. Utility bills go up when it’s cold outside because heating systems have to operate longer to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the customer’s homes.  While it’s true that an employee was terminated in 1997 under a similar circumstance, I don’t see what this has to do with Ms. W[redacted] complaint. We can’t confirm that she was even a customer of the CPW twenty-one years ago.  If she did put cash in our night deposit, she obviously didn’t read the sign that clearly states “WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR CASH DEPOSITS LEFT IN NIGHT DEPOSITORY BOX”. Furthermore, our internal process requires two employees to open the night depository every morning and post the payments that were left overnight. We occasionally have customers claim they put cash in the night depository, but our electronic surveillance system proves otherwise.     The CPW’s electric and natural gas rates are below the state average.

First, regarding the statement they made about me not being a customer. I have been a customer since for over 22 years, actually since 17/18 years old, just different addresses. For them to make a statement that I obvioulsy didnt read the rules concerning the night deposit box, is outrageous. I did put cash in the box and it was stolen by workers there, there are several others this has happened to and can be proven. But the issue is the high rates. Me and the people of this community statrted a petition against CPW, which in fact have over 500 signatures and counting. There are 100's of people in the community with complaints about the experiences they have with CPW of Laurens, especially the outrageous rates. They have not filed complaints because of lack of resoursces to do so, but we are working on that. I reject there response because we need action, we need answers to why our rates are high. There are no other utility companies in this town, besides Laurens Electric, Duke Power, and Laurens water and sewer. But, it depends on where we reside as to which utility company we can use. A majority of us dont have a choice but to use CPW and we want answers! We all are prepared to attend the next meeting which is next month. I am still working on documentation to submit. Ms. A[redacted] is incorrect. The CPW doesn’t raise everyone’s electric bill in December and January. Customer’s utility bills are determined by monthly meter readings. The current months readings are subtracted from the last months readings to determine their usage for the billing period.  The...

reason her utility bill is higher compared to her November bill is because it was much colder in December and January than it was in November. The billing period Ms. A[redacted] is questioning (Dec 7-Jan 8) contained 4 days where the average temperature was 36 degrees, 10 days where the average temperature was 29 degrees and 11 days where the average temperature was 25 or below.  When it is this cold, heating systems operate longer, especially if the thermostat is set above 68 degrees, the house has inadequate insulation or if the heating system isn’t well maintained.
