I signed a 6 month lease with Harbor Pointe Apt at the end of February to move in March 1st. When I saw the apartment initially in January, they told me the unit was the last one of that size that they had. It was a loft style one level unit and it was nice - until I looked up. The ceiling was wooden planks, a red color with dark knots. But most of the dark areas I noticed were not knots but mold patches. I dont do mold as I'm highly allergic. The manager [redacted], who showed me the unit informed me then that the couple living there previously had to be moved out into another unit bc of the leakage in the roof but they were fixing it BEFORE I moved in. A week before I moved in, I go in and put down money for deposit and sign papers. She never brings up the roof so I asked about it. It was then she tells me that "no, we hadn't had anyone come yet bc of the winter and snow" but assures me that it will be taken care of once the snow melts. First they said the entire building was getting a new roof, then that changed it to just the roofing over my unit. In the meantime, I move in the following week and get my check in list and they had SOOOO much that needed to be done. The oven smoked up the place every time it was turned on, the kitchen sink leaked water from the faucet base, the bathroom didn't have all its lighting, it was dirty and apparently it had spiders in it bc the corners up by the ceiling all had massive cobwebs. The roof where mostly all the incidences (water leaks, insect debris) took place was over my living room. And bc of this inconvenience I could never really use it bc I had to request them to lay down plastic over my furniture. After a month and a half of that, I requested that they just staple plastic up on the ceiling in which they slowly did. Every requests for anything took about 3 - 5 days. They were never prepared to fully fix things in one visit. They didn't have a deadbolt key copy (something all rental places should have) so I had to leave my door locked only at the doorknob which made me feel uncomfortable. They gave me an indoor parking spot to keep me quiet rather than just lowering my rent. After 3 months, the roofers finally decided to fix it (this was like 3-4 weeks after they loaded the roof with materials and them missing some opportune days). After I complained about not knowing what they were planning, I had the property manager, [redacted] notify me what was going on. I kept being told that the roofers was coming week after week (never anything in writing) and when they did show up, [redacted] told me that the roofers cleaned out the roof before laying the new one in bc there were ant nests and spiders up there along with rotten wood and deteriorated insulation. So finally I'm thinking I can start enjoying my place but no. The debris from the ceiling is still falling! And day by day if I didn't vacuum it up these piles of "stuff" would get bigger and bigger! This is AFTER the roof repair...I was livid! It was everywhere! Falling all on my living room couch and rugs. What makes matters worse were they're excuse as to how they are a "small community within itself" and that they had over 500 units with a small staff. This told me that my issue wasn't important to them. I tried one last time working with them and we agreed that they would caulk the ceiling to stop the falling debris. Total fail. This just caused old piles to stop and new ones to form even more viciously. I believe they had termites but they never admitted to it. They refused to believe even the idea. [redacted] then said it was Ant dirt/sand from the nest the "roofers supposedly cleaned out". The head of maintenance, [redacted] didn't even think WI had termites! What?! When maintenance came, they only caulked certain parts of the ceiling and not where they saw the piles (which I left on purpose so they could see the problem areas) so that plan too, also failed. I had had it. It was then they offered me to either move to another unit or leave altogether (all at my expense mind you). I got outta there sooo fast! Found another place within a week and started moving out that weekend. I only lived there 2 and a half months out of my 6 month lease. They had their "contracted" exterminators mail me a copy of the "report" of the investigation they did after the fact. The report said that the remnants wasn't from wood-boring pests but it didn't say what it was either. Like I'm gonna believe that. I know termite frass when I see it. And if they weren't termites, than they were carpenter ants. Now I know what they harboring over at Harbor Pointe!
Maintenance was a huge reason why I ultimately couldn't stay there. They were naive people who did nothing but put band aides on problems rather than fix them. If I was home while they were fixing it, they didn't hesitate to tell me how I was overworking them. I'm sure no one wants to live in a place with broken appliances or that's dirty or infested. Why couldn't they see that? I bet they wouldn't trade places with me. I'm writing this not bc I'm bitter but to make people aware of their attitude towards you.
