Cross Country Tours Reviews (%countItem)

This company was always late, a driver was unsafe, and the air was out causing multiple problems with our trip.
We used this company for our DC, Virginia, & Maryland trip with a large group of parents, students, and chaperones. The buses never arrived on time to pick us up for any stop the entire trip. They caused us to miss multiple stops in our vacation itinerary over the week due to their lateness. Our first driver was texting and driving on bus 4 from Olive Branch, MS to Tennessee. We got a picture of him not only talking and driving but actually texting while driving 55 people. The buses had no plugs or outlets, no wifi, no cup holders, and we were told multiple times we could not use the bathroom in the back unless it was to urinate only. To top it all off, 1 of our 4 buses had air conditioning issues. From the start it was never really cold in the bus. By day 3 the air was completely out. It was probably 100 degrees and people were feeling sick. It stayed out for days before they said it was fixed for our ride back to MS from D.C. On the way back, the air still did NOT work. When we pulled over we had to start pulling kids off the bus before they could possibly go into heat stroke and die. Parents volunteered to take their places on the hot bus for a 10+ hour ride home. This company was horrible. You should NEVER use them and they should be put out of business before someone gets hurt.

Desired Outcome

They should refund all the $ to the school for the trip.

Cross Country Tours Response • Jul 01, 2019

Ref Case# ***
***
On May 24, 2019 I received a letter in the mail from Revdex.com that there was a complaint against our company from***/Lewisburg Middle School concerning there recent travel to Washington, DC.

We, at Cross Country Tours take seriously our responsibility to provide safe, reliable and comfortable travel arrangements to all of our clients. However, unforeseen occurrences do happen, as it did in this case.

First, the statement that we were always late is an inaccurate. According to the itinerary that was provided, we followed the direction that was given by the head chaperone that would allow our operators to perform their duties within the guidelines of D.O.T. (Department of Transportation). There were toll roads that were close to many of the sites to visit, but the group leader refused to pay tolls. Due to this decision, the coaches had to use alternate routes with heavy traffic that did cause some time constraints. All events scheduled were attended with the exception of the Holocaust Museum. The reason is unknown by our office at this time, but our driver's followed all of the chaperones' instructions.

Driver's texting while driving is not allowed. However, the driver{s) are allowed to communicate with other drivers on a multi-coach movement, only if there is a need, provided they use the proper headset which should be voice activated. This was possibly what was observed during the trip. Drivers' phone use outside this allowable operation would violate our company's guidelines and would definitely be addressed if brought to our office's attention while traveling.

The use of the restroom on a trip traveling the distance from Mississippi to Maryland would require a little discipline and cooperation. The drivers will make the announcement to only use restroom for urinating because defecation on the coach while traveling would make their travel very uncomfortable for all other passengers. The toilets are not flushable or disposable on the roads, so we make sufficient rest stops to accommodate the client's needs.

The A/C problem was addressed in a timely manner. This was brought to our Memphis office on Friday during the middle of transfers to a point of interest.

Once we received this communication, from our driver, we begin immediately to make arrangements to have this unit checked out by a company in Washington,
D.C.*** a reputable company in the Maryland and Washington,
D.C. area. However, they were so busy with other bus problems that were ahead of us and would have only been able to get to us in the morning (Saturday). The driver took the coach to*** to have the NC serviced. They *** attempted to charge this coach but could not complete because of the duties they had with there own coaches. They made an attempt to evaluate the problem, but were not successful.

At this point, we begin to vigorously make calls to several bus companies in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. We ca11ed 16 charter bus companies in these areas to charter another coach or find a mechanic on duty. Not one of them had an available coach or mechanic. They all said this was a busy week - weekend for all carriers contacted.*** was very helpful. The dispatcher,*** gave us a list of mobile mechanics.

We reached out to these mobile mechanics and were fortunate to find one who came out to service the coach that evening. He was able to charge the NC, but detected a sma11 pin hole in the compressor. He said the unit should be cooling for at least 5hrs. before another recharge would be needed.

The group leader stated he wants to leave with a working NC or not. Once the unit was charged the coaches arrived for the departure at 7:45 PM instead of the 6:00 PM departure. The bus was cooling as mechanic stated it would. After several hundred miles, the unit did stop cooling and the hatches were opened to bring in some air. Students were moved to the other coaches; however the parents that stayed on the coach commented to the driver that the bus was cool. When the group stopped at *** in Virginia, parents bought blankets for the ride home!

We made our drive home with no further incidents. Our service requested by this group was fulfilled. By no means am I minimizing the inconvenience the group endured, however, we made ever attempt at our disposal to make arrangements to accommodate this group.

I truly regret *** feels the way she does, as well as any others. However, being in the transportation industry for many years, we know that unforeseen occurrences may occur at times. We always make it our priority to exhaust all avenues to rectify any issues expeditiously, which we did in this case. I would like to again express my sincere apologies to ***
Sincerely
