C&S Waste Solutions Reviews (1)

Review: Dear Mr. [redacted],

I have been a customer of Clearlake Waste Solutions since either the end of 1999 when I moved to this address or early after 2000 after I got settled. Either way, I've had my trash dumped by your company over 700 times over the years.

During this time, I've had few problems with things ending up in a trash bin that shouldn't be there. Lately however, it seems to be a monthly occurrence on my account.

I called this month because once again, second month in a row, I'm being charged for 'contamination' of other garbage. When I asked what it was that I was doing wrong, I was informed of all kinds of stuff it could be, right down to a plastic bag, which I admitted to possibly putting in the recycle bin. And for that I'm being charged an additional $34.99.

When I asked specifically what it was the driver is seeing I was told, 'there's really no way of knowing unless the driver wrote something down. Otherwise the driver just writes 'contaminated' next to your name. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!

I was also told that there seems to be an 'influx' of 'contamination' going on 'in my area'. Is that my neighborhood, Clearklake as a whole or all of Lake County? And is it coincidence that employee bonuses may be coming up and all of a sudden after 15 yrs at this same address of being 'earth friendly' I'm being tagged and don't even know for what.

And Mr. [redacted], I have an 8 camera surveillance system that monitors all the roads around my house. Not only have I personally, along with MANY other customers of yours, witnessed both the regular trash and the recycle trash being dumped AT THE SAME TIME, INTO THE SAME TRUCK, but my camera's have also videoed this happening for many years now.

I don't believe that there is ANY system in your trucks that can GUARANTEE there would be no cross contamination when you are using the same trucks to dump both trash and recycle, yet folks like me get tagged for a plastic bag? For all we know, your drivers mess up and 'tag' someone to make ups for it. Your system is very flawed and I for one want to see it corrected. But trust me when I say this Mr. [redacted]... I am FAR from being the only one fed up with your way of business.

I don't have a choice for trash companies and since I'm disabled it's not easy for me to get to the dump either, so I'm stuck with your drivers 'checking a box' next to my name and never having to explain what the problems with my trash seem to be. That's very bad business.

I am very reluctantly paying my bill but only because I have no choice. However, I do feel like I am being 'taken' with no explanation and as far as I know all the people involved in this 'influx' are also being taken.

The end result for me, other then this letter to you, (because you have yet to return my call), is my very earth friendly family of SEVEN are now so paranoid about what we can recycle, in fear of getting that almost $35.00 fine check mark by our name that we no longer really even try. Seems a pity to put a stop to something so good for the world as a whole because I'm never sure if I'm gonna get the 'check mark'.

This is very bad business and I hope my suspicions are wrong in that all of a sudden right around the holidays coming up, there's a mysterious 'influx' raking in $34.39 per checkmark EVERY WEEK> How does it sound when you hear it?

Sincerely,

[redacted]Desired Settlement: I don't believe that there is ANY system in your trucks that can GUARANTEE there would be no cross contamination when you are using the same trucks to dump both trash and recycle, yet folks like me get tagged for a plastic bag? Response:

Dear Ms. [redacted], Thank you for your letter regarding the contamination charge you received. Contamination charges are assessed when the driver visually sees contaminants as described in our recycling guide, which we mail twice a year to our customers and is also available on our website. I have enclosed the most recent recycling guide and newsletter, as well as an explanation from our website, all which address the contamination issue. There are several reasons for the contamination fee. Your quarterly rate does not cover the extra cost of manually removing the contamination from our recycling loads and paying to dispose of the material at the landfill. Your last contamination charge was assessed and waived in October of 2011. We are willing to waive the first charge in hopes that the customer will pay closer attention to the material placed in the blue and green carts. Contamination is a costly issue for us and we take it seriously. To answer your question, contamination exists on all of our routes to varying degrees. In 2007 we purchased split body trucks which collect garbage and recycling in two separate chambers inside the truck body. The trucks have greatly improved our efficiency, which in turn helps keep the rates we charge affordable. Also, it eliminated a third trip on streets, thus eliminating additional wear and tear. Your assertion that these trucks do not work is untrue. In fact, split body collection trucks are now widely used across the country. Our goal is to reduce the material going to the landfill and recycle as much as we can in the most efficient manner possible. Diverting material away from the landfill is not only the right thing to do, but it makes the most business sense. Every ton we divert saves us money which helps our business and in turn helps keep rates low. We receive very few complaints from our customers which I believe is directly due the dedication and professionalism of our employees. Your allegation that our drivers randomly tag customers because they “mess up” is untrue. There is no quota as you elude to in your letter. A perfect world for me, our drivers and our recycling sorting staff would be absolutely no contamination in our blue and green carts. Please read the attached, “Contamination – Why is it Important?” for a more thorough explanation about the problems associated with contaminated recycling. I appreciate your taking the time to voice your concerns and for being a long time customer. If you have a question about whether a particular item can be recycled in your blue or green cart, you can call our office at ###-###-#### for answers. I would also ask that before you jump to conclusions about our trucks, drivers and the way we do business, I invite you and your family to come to our facility to see exactly what we do and how our trucks really do work. This is an eye-opening experience for visitors to see in person how much contamination is received in the recycling, and the problems it causes. Please feel free to call me directly at [redacted] if you have any questions or would like to schedule a tour of our facility or a split-body truck. Sincerely, [redacted]Clearlake Waste Solutions, Inc.
