On 9 July I moved from a one bedroom to a two bedroom apartment. The request for services was to pack and move a one-bedroom apartment and to move two storage units, one 9x9 that was about a quarter full and one 10x10 that was fairly full. My first complaint is that the company did not provide the required "Information About Your Move" document or the required "not to exceed" amount. The timeline of the day's events is as follows:
At 0800 the movers showed up. Right off the bat the foreman's attitude was unprofessional. He wasn't obviously rude, but acted like being htere was a bother. The other two movers were friendly and courteous. After I signed the papers they went out to their truck and were gone for about half an hour.
0800 Movers arrived and had me sign paperwork to get started.
0830 Movers returned from their truck and started packing.
For the next few hours the movers slowly acked a few boxes at a time. THere didn't appear to be any type of plan or organization. They just started at one end of hte apartment and moved through, missing random things along the way. (I had a full car load to move myself the next day.) After packing for a few minues, about enough for two dollies, the foreman would call "let's go" and the other two movers would stop in the middle of what they were doing and they'd take the two dollies or one piece of furniture and a dolly out to the truck. Each time they went out to the truck they would come back about furniture and a dolly out to the truck. Each time they went out to the truck they would come back about 30 minutes later. We started timing them to get an average for each trip. We also started timing ourselves taking trips to the car with smaller items. We used the same elevator and added slowly walking a lap around the block for accuacy. Our average was 10 - 15 miutes per trip.
1400 I called the company to complain. The manager infomed me the move was taking so long because I also had storage. I informed him we hadn't looked at storage yet. The movers were still packing the apartment. At this point I started taking pictures of progress. I took a picture of every room in the apartment to show how much had been done in 5 hours.
Note: Also packing little bits and moving them rather than completely packing before moving allowed them to charge me the packign amount for a larger portion of the move.
1430 The manager called me back and said he had spoken to the foreman and hte reason for hte move taking so long was that two other moving companies had shown up and they all had to use the same elevator. (BOth of those companies showed up after our moving company and both of them were gone by noon.) Because there was a concern about the amount of cash I could take out in a day the manager said he would charge the cash amount if I used a card.
1600 Finished packing the apartment. Took pictures of the inside of the truck to show how much stuff came out of the apartment and the amount of time it took to pack it all and get it into the truck. (8 hours) Took a picture of the storage room to show ho wmuch was in it before the movers started working on it.
1630 Finished the storage room in the garage at the apartment building (3 miles from the other apartment).
1930 Finished loading everything into the new apartment. LEft for the storage facility (less than 1 mile from the apartment). Took a picture of the items in the storage unit.
2030 Moved the rest of the items into the new apartment.
2100 Completed everything and the foremean called the manager. TEh foreman then claimed the move took so long because I had enough stuff for a three-bedroom house. I can maybe see that if you count the things in storage, btu that portion of the move required no packing and took less than an hour. MOving the one-bedroom apartment still took 12 hours if you exclude what was in storage. I have pictures to show the amount of stuff at each location.
Teh manager agreed to take 2 hours off the packing tiem and brought the price down to $1395, still completely unreasonable for moving a one-bedroom apartment three miles. The foreman also argued the fact that I was paying with a card at the end and we had the call the manager again to sort that out. After looking at the numbers later he also failed to include the previously agreed upon military discount.
Not only did this company take more of our money that they rightfully earned, they also took more of our time.
All photographs I have taken from the move are available upon request.
