We began our relationship with custom decks after coming across them at the home and garden show in march of 2020. WE reached out to them to get an estimate for a new deck to be installed in our back yard. We received the quote from them and even though they were more expensive we opted to proceed with them. We gave them a total of $7500 down payment to get the process started. They did a technical rendering of the deck of what we wanted. A few days later they called back and said that due to an easement issue there was no way that douglas county was going to approve a deck to the fence line. That the deck had to be at least 3 feet from the fence. With our back yard there would not be enough room for us to have a useable deck.
They did advise that we could just proceed without a permit, which we told them absolutely not. We started to explore other options. The next and really only feasible option was a concrete patio. Custom Decks advised that they also do concrete work and we got a bid from them for the back patio. We went ahead and signed off on it. The bid that we received says the following;
"We do not subcontract our labor. All builders work directly for us and only us."
I followed up with Custom Decks about the bid because they do not list the price per square foot. The response from there staff was the following;
"Hi, So our stamped concrete costs $23 per square foot. There is more labor needed for stamping the concrete and coloring it. However, we don't have the least expensive concrete pricing in comparison to a concrete specific company. Concrete companies will be less expensive then us as they are not subbing out the concrete"
From this point forward we decided that we wanted to find a different company to work with and asked them for the deposit back. They said that they would return our deposit, less the technical rendering which is $495.00
When I asked the owner of the company about this he got very defensive and irate and refused to return the money. Our stance on the $495 is that yes, they did make a technical rendering but it was completely inaccurate to the concrete and was only based on a deck design that we cannot get.
