My nearly 87 year old father hired this company to repair a barn on my property and re-roof and paint his house.
The original bid to repair the barn was $3,000. The total cost to repair the barn ended up being nearly $19,000!
The owner of this company convinced my elderly father to grant power of attorney, allowing him to deal with the insurance company directly regarding a claim for the roof replacement. The insurance company began investigating him when he was requesting copies of the full insurance policy, and attempting to overstep his bounds with insurance.
The owner, Damon, stated the roof was 37 squares plus 20% waste, but insurance disagreed and said the roof was just 27 squares with 15% waste. We later had another contractor bid the roof whose estimate was for 27 squares plus 10% waste. This guy tried to tell my father that it was "code" that required him to paint the entire ceiling of his garage after making a repair where an old pipe went through he ceiling of the garage up to the roof!
I spoke with the claims adjuster who said she is glad I stepped in because she could tell this guy was a "shyster", and he was "pushy", and she was afraid my father was being taken advantage of, but as an adjuster, she couldn't say anything.
We have found he charged my father $4,500 to pressure wash his 1-story brick home (standard rate is just $450, 10% of that cost!) and he double charged him on the painting (two separate invoices listed the same $750 charge).
His contract states that should insurance agree to pay for something, but the homeowner chooses not to have certain repairs made, that the homeowner is responsible for splitting that portion of the insurance money 50/50! Not even sure that's legal - we will be addressing that, along with many other points with an attorney.
This guy kept asking for more and more money. We discovered that he asked for $1,000-$8,000 every week. He was on the job for 3 months and had only repaired the barn and started painting the trim on my fathers brick ranch home. When he tried to collect another check for $12,000 (which was "half the remaining balance" according to this contractor) we stepped in.
In total, my father paid this guy over $57,000. We had my father fire him before the "balance of $24,000" was paid. That would have been $69,000 for a $3,000 barn repair and a roof that insurance covered to replace at a total of just under $13,000!
He also advertised on his paperwork that he was a Revdex.com member, but you can tell by his profile he is not, and according to the Revdex.com, he never has been.
We informed him he must have a police escort to retrieve his trailer and some other small equipment, which he stored on my property (not my father's) for 3 months. When we set up the time for him to retrieve those items, he tried to say some of the materials he had stored in the barn he repaired were for another job. Ironically enough, there were exactly 37 sheets of plywood - the same number of squares he bid to fix my father's roof. And, not sure why he would think it is OK to store materials for someone else's job on this one. I'm pretty sure he's just trying to get some of the materials my father paid for back so he can get even more money.
We finally had my father hire another contractor to finish the job, but he has to pay another $10,000 just to get the work completed. The new contractor will be done in just 1-2 days.
Though I don't recommend you even consider hiring this contractor, I would suggest you research Damon N[redacted]'s police record first.
We are not filing a complaint with Revdex.com because are reporting this contractor to the Attorney General and filing a law suit, along with criminal charges, and a complaint through Revdex.com would negate all other claims.
