DAC Medical Vision/MTO Medical and Vision Waiver Driving Assessment Programs/MTO Approved Cognitive and Rehabilitation Center

My father had a cognitive test done here in March/20. It cost $791 and since it's done by a occupational therapist, I appreciate that the cost of result that it is administered by a health professional. ***, the tester, was very professional and did a thorough job. She called me to explain why my Dad didn't pass, and then made a second call after she had talked to my Dad to let me know how the conversation went, which I considered to be above and beyond what is expected. I'm grateful for this service because we want our roads to be safe. It's hard when someone gets old and you have to tell them you don't think it's safe for them to drive. This way an independent third party made an assessment, guided by Ministry of Transportation regulations, that he wasn't safe to drive and informed him, so I wasn't the "bad" person. The test was very thorough, both of his cognitive abilities and his driving abilities. The tester is required to send the results to my father's family doctor, the neurologist that requested the test and the ministry

Was quoted $904.00 for an "assessment" which is required to obtain a "Vision Waiver" from *** so I could renew my driver's license. (I lost an eye in 1984) . After an "occupational therapist" tested me for cognitive , mobility, and vision problems a road test (and another vision tests) was scheduled for March 8th. During this test the instructor said I was "a very good driver" but drove too fast on the icy roads and would hear from them by March 13.
I heard nothing and finally checking with the *** near the end of the month, was told nothing had been received from D.A.C. !
After many delays the *** informed me that D.A.C. recommended "Remedial Driving Lessons" ! Apparently I had I had failed my road test. Many calls to D.A.C. resulted in a one hour lesson with "***" (cost $100.00) on April 17th. Everything seemed to go smoothly and my instructor said I would hear from him. I never did.
Calls to D.A.C.s Ottawa telephone go to their Pembrooke office and I was told "*** recommended another $100.00 lesson. ! When I balked at that , I was told it was "optional" and I could go for another "Driving Assessment Test" on 29 April at a cost of $399.00 !
If one fails the "Visual Assessment" part no driving road test is allowed so I must have passed that . Why are they insisting on more "Remedial" and road tests?
These people can jerk you around and milk you dry and there is nothing you can do about it !
There is only one other Visual Assessment Center in Ottawa and the waiting l period is 5 months long.

The *** will do your testing at no charge. They have the time too . . . do not believe what DAC tell you!
