Dan Hall Construction Reviews (%countItem)

In October of 2019, I signed a contract with this building contractor to demolish our existing back porch and build a new one per drawings that I provided. A deposit of 200.00 was sent per this contractors requirements and I accepted and signed off on his bid. He said I was "locked in and first on his list to start the first week of April 2020. On January 16, I got an email from Dan H stating he was not going to be able to perform these services because of a lack of help and personal reasons. He also stated he would be sending my 200.00 deposit back as well as my drawings. As of this date, February 19, 2020, I have not received either my deposit or drawings. I have made several attempts to contact Dan H via email, (they come back as deliverable), texts and phone c***s go unanswered.
Product_Or_Service: Construction of back porch

Desired Outcome

Refund I would like my deposit back and my drawings.

On August 18, 2019, an estimate was sent to customer ***. The estimate was for a job totaling $17,820. We received a customer signature for this estimate on September 3, 2019 along with a $200 check to hold the customer's spot on our schedule for April 2020. (All dates and documents can be proven)
In October 2019, customer contacted our company asking for the contractor to return to customer's home to revise the project plans. The job went from a $17,000 job, to a project well over $90,000. A new estimate was never given to the customer for the revised plans he wanted. This is due to not getting estimates from other subcontractors needed to complete the job. No new contracts for this new project were ever signed between customer/contractor. The contractor spent numerous hours on the phone with many other subcontractors, trying to get estimates for the additional work that would need to be done (i.e. excavation, concrete companies, etc). When the companies that were called explained that they didn't have any availability for the time period for this job, the contractor then went ahead and informed the customer, that this new plan was out of our company's ability to accomplish. A check was mailed back to the customer in the amount of $200, and the customer's hand drawings of the plan were also returned. The $200 deposit originally sent in September 2019, was not sent in exchange for work to be done. It is specifically listed in the August 2019 estimate as a "schedule holding fee". No project work was done at this customer's home. However, several hours were spent working on a new estimate and the customer's address was 70 miles round trip from the contractor's prior residence (contractor moved Jan 28, 2020). The contractor made the trip 2 times to meet with the customer and spent a minimum of 30-45 minutes each time discussing plans with the customer. Well over $200 in time and fuel was spent on this customer and the money was still returned. The customer also stated to the contractor that this would be a cash deal if we wanted to avoid taxes. Those types of statements, along with the major changes made to the original project, made the contractor very uncomfortable working with this customer.

I did receive a check on Feb. 28, 2020 for the amount of 200.00, thank you Revdex.com. I NEVER implied at ANY time that this job was going to be "under the table". I was suspicious when he did not give me any refences or pictures showing his work, even though I asked. I was going on what he did for a co worker who was satisfied with the job he did on his basement. I told Dan that I was not going to borough the money and I have taken it out of investments and that I had it ready to go. For the most part, he is correct in his statement that he was not able to get sub bids. Several months went by without any communication until Jan. 16, 2020 when he notified me that this job was over his head and he was going to cancel. When I tried to contact him via calls, texts they were not responded to and my emails came back as undeliverable. As of this date, March 3, 2020, I STILL have not received my drawings back however.

Money and drawings were returned. We have several pictures posted online to the public of all of our work.
No work was done for this person because for the 2 months after October when HE modified the job, there wasn't a single subcontractor able to get to the job in April 2020. That is why we didn't give an updated estimate. We needed estimates from other companies before we updated our estimate for the new project. We have never had a complaint in the 13 years we've been in business. This is how we put food on the table, and we shouldn't have to deal with a complaint from someone we never even worked for. This company is more than capable of building a garage, we are not capable of pouring concrete or excavating. We were right to cancel before down payments were exchanged.

The bottom line is, I would not have received both deposit or drawings back after he cancelled this job if I had not involved the Revdex.com. This contractor should stick to basement remodel jobs as shown on his website. That is what he appears to do best.
