In the summer of I received an angry phone call from an individual who had retained our company to prepare
his individual tax return
This individual was a stranger to me when he came to our firm at the height of the tax seasonHe brought a complex tax return with a variety of tax issuesAt the initial meeting, he did not provide complete documentationBecause critical information was missing we had to request additional information from the client, including information regarding his insolvency in tax year One of the pieces of information the client provided was an insolvency worksheetWe based our insolvency calculations on this worksheet prepared and provided by the client
We prepared the return based on the information provided and released it in June We specifically stated in our cover letter that it was the client's responsibility to: "examine these returns carefully to fully acquaint yourself with all items contained therein to ensure that there are no omissions or misstatements."
We did not have any further contact from the client after June 2013until summer of 2015, over months later, when my administrator received an angry phone call from himHe said another CPA firm reviewed his tax return and amended itI asked him why he didn't bring this to my attention when he discovered an issue with the returnHe made vague demands for funds/compensation and said that if I didn't compensate him he would make sure he gave our firm a minimum of $1,of damage, hurt our firm's reputation, and threaten my professional standing The former client's threats, vague demands, tone, and the staleness of the issue at hand led me to the conclusion that this individual was not trying to resolve a problem in good faithI made the decision to distance myself and our firm from this former client
The final part of our conversation was the former client's ultimatumHe said I had one week to compensate him (without mentioning what he expected) or he would start making reprisalsI immediately refused to engage in any discussionsOur firm will not be bullied or forced into a former client's predetermined course of action
A successful professional relationship is based on mutual respect, communication and cooperationOur Company has been in business for over yearsWe have always been advocates for our clients and our client's financial situationWe have never received a complaint through the Revdex.com in our yearsWe strive to do the right thing given the situationThe right thing here was to distance ourselves from this former client

Numerous items in the statement above are completely untrueWhether it is a bad memory on Dana's part or an outright lie, I NEVER prepared a insolvency worksheet because I didn't know how and I didn't want to make a mistake when submitting something to the IRSI did not state an amount in my initial call with Dana as I merely asked him if he had been charged $1,for a service and subsequently learned that it was not up to the professional standards, what would he expect the individual or company to doI'm not out to make a profit but to merely be reimbursed for the work someone else did to fix his firms errors but he has no interest in owning thatI know that I did not receive the level of professional service that I was charged but I will consider it an expensive learning lessonI will not pursue the matter any further here but just want to make sure that anyone else considering using this firm for their taxes should have another CPA review their work
