Dartmouth - Hitchcock Clinic Reviews (1)

My wife (and I) had very bad experience recently at the Endoscopy center in Manchester. My wife was scheduled for a 9:15 appointment for a colonoscopy (preventative). She and I both arrived at promptly 9:00 am for her/our (I was the driver) appointment (15 minutes in advance). At that time I as the designated driver was informed that her "pick-up" time would be roughly 11:30-11:45 am.
At roughly 9:15 am my wife was called in by a person - while I found a seat outside down the hall from the waiting room (as there were a couple young children in the actual waiting room running around) just down the hall and essentially in front of what I would later learn was the rear entrance/elevator area - anxiously awaiting for my wife to complete the procedure.

While waiting for my wife, there were people exiting the gastrointestinal department VIA the rear door and were being walked downstairs by a young man that worked in the department - apparently there to escort folks having just completed the procedure downstairs. In every instance this person would ask the person having just had the procedure "did you have a nice sleep", "did you have a nice sleep" and follow with "isn't that Propofol terrific"?

I found this to be a very personal and insensitive and disturbing question for someone just having woken up from anesthesia.

Regardless, suddenly at approximately 10:45 am just in front of me the elevator doors opened and in rushed EMT's to the rear entrance of the gastrointestinal department. My heart immediately went to my throat - knowing that my wife was still inside the unit. At what I would estimate as probably being 5 minutes later (an eternity) a women - and mercifully not my wife - was then rushed out of the rear of the gastrointestinal unit and into the elevator.

At this point my anxiety is unbelievable. Tick, tick, tick... 11:30 am passes, as does 11:45 am... the window I was asked to make sure I was available to pick-up my wife. Tick, tick, tick.... 12:00, 12:15, and 12:30 passes... then at approximately 12:40 pm an employee appeared and asked if I were my wife's ride and requested that I come in to see her. Mercifully a few minutes later we left the department - but were accompanied by the annoying individual chosen to escort us and be with my wife while I retrieved our vehicle from the parking lot.

As I was exiting the building and heading out the doors - sure enough I hear the individual ask my wife if she had a nice sleep. At which point I returned and told the young man that it didn't work out that way for [redacted] or [redacted] and that he had better not say another word to my wife - while I returned to get the car. Too stupid to apparently know why, he asked why and I told him to just shut the bleep up.

Later on the ride home my wife informed me that while they took her in at 9:30 am and administered an IV right away, and asked her a few questions.... she WAS LEFT LAYING ON THE GERNEY IN NOTHING BUT A JONNY AND COVERED BY ONLY A SHEET - FREEZING HER 108 POUND [redacted] OFF - UNTIL HER PROCEDURE AT 11:00 AM.

I said they didn't take you until 11:00 am? She said that she was told by the person that administered the IV that that was the time she was scheduled for.

REALLY? You requested that we arrive at 9:15 am for a freakn 11:00 am scheduled procedure?

To be fair, my wife said that at one point a person apparently heard her teeth chattering and brought her a warm blanket.

She also said she had a front row seat for the medical emergency that caused me to have an ulcer. Apparently only a few chincy curtains separate 1 person's personal conversations with medical staff from another's. Really?

I inquired demanding to know why you require such a lead time for a colonoscopy procedure (9:15 arrival for a 11:00 appointment)? I received a feeble response saying they "We are sorry you are unhappy with your experience during your wife's recent appointment in our endoscopy center". Really? I also asked why they request folks waiting for people having colonoscopies to be there just a half hour/45 minute after the scheduled start of the procedure?
to which I received the following response - "It is our process to ask patients to arrive early for their procedures. This allows time to for prepping the patient and reviewing her medical history, allergies, etc. before the procedure starts. Start and end times are estimated, as some procedures take longer than others. We are sorry you were inconvenienced by a longer wait". They also responded "The staff person who escorted your wife to the door has been coached to engage in more benign conversation".

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!
