Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2016/07/12) */

shade tree mechanic, we started working on the car and found several pinched and cut wires. We also could get no communication from the pcm. We repaired two wires and replaced the pcm, after we replaced the pcm it still would not start and we found another pinched wire and repaired, we then had to put in another pcm at no charge to the cust. We test drove the car and found no problem at that time. The cust was called and he picked up the car and drove it home. The next morning he called back and said it would not start again I explained to him that with wiring and work that was done by him that the only way I could fix it correctly was by replacing the engine harness. To replace the engine harness it run about 2200.00 dollars. the wiring was to much of a mess to try and piece together. He told me he would talk to his father or father inlaw I cant remember which one. I never heard back from him, and then one morning the car was sitting in front of the service door, when he came in I told him that we would not do any thing unless he would ok the wiring harness if that's what it needed. Once again he told me he would let me know. He then showed up with several other people and a trailer, WE did offer to help them load the trailer and they refused 2 times. Then an older lady came in and asked for the service manager and I told her that that was me, she then called me an ahole, I told her to have a nice day, and she flipped me off. I had several customers and employees heard and seen that. One of the office ladies came out after she heard her to find out what was going on. I never cursed at that lady. We never removed the crank, or cam sensor as they said we did and pinched the wire. All we did was repair wires and replaced the pcm. I did tell [redacted] after he threatened to get a lawyer that if he did he would be charged 35.00 a day storage. We did not however charge him any storage. As far as warranty goes the only part of the job we did would be the pcm, the wiring was a mess and unless it was a new harness there would be know way of being able to warranty old wiring. As far as the owner responding to there call, they had already sent a complaint to G.M. on a survey, so there was no longer any reason to contact them, we explained the situation to G.M. customer assistance and that was as far as we go. Thank you [redacted] Service manager at Davis Buick GMC.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 7, 2016/07/15) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
1. The "shade tree mechanic" has restored 100s of classic cars over the last 60 years. By shadetree mechanic he meant he doesnt have computer diagnostic equipment. Actually the shadetree mechanic has a 9000 lb car lift in a new 1800 sq foot pole barn/man cave for repairs on the 56 chevy convertible we use to represent Unity Pointe methodist in parades, the 1967 camaro for the same, and just finished adding all new power disk brakes and power steering to a restored frame([redacted] straightened the frame) that will go under a 1936 Ford coupe(it was rolled by an angry wife 30 years ago and sat in a garage since).
[redacted] was being humble.
2. Yes the timing belt was changed, they are easy to do, most cars over 120k miles need a new belt, they stretch.
3. Davis Buick told us 1 wire was repaired(a single wire behind the ABS system, part of the brakes), and reported they taped it rather than using approved connectors (I have not checked that on the car) *Davis also told us they replaced the PCM(power control Module), the rest of this story is news to us
4. The independent shop repaired the vehicle and reported NO issues with the current wiring harness, except the pinched wire that shorted out. The vehicle left Davis Buick and went straight to the 3rd party shop. Actually the shop reported the wires were "smashed" behind the mounting crankshaft position sensor mounting plate. Davis reported they examined the crankshaft position sensor prior to the pcm, had the wire been so obviously smashed as they examined the sensor, and as they traced the reported numerous issues in the wiring harness (the other shop didnt see) they would have noted that as an obvious issue.
The wire was not "smashed" against the mount prior to the work at Davis, and it would not have taken hundreds of miles or more of driving to cause the short.
5. [redacted] was being pragmatic and efficient by informing them of repairs done in the last year. The water pump was also replaced- I just had similar work done to my 2008 honda pilot with similar miles on it as a preventative measure.
The vehicle ran fine until the PCM module went out(the vehicle does have over 100k miles). Davis traced the issue through the crankshaft sensor and then to the PCM.
5 As the manager said- he wanted to replace the harness for $2200 but was not sure that would even repair the new problem. "I told him that we would not do any thing unless he would ok the wiring harness IF THAT'S WHAT IS NEEDED" [redacted], Davis Buick GMC service manager.
Conclusion:
Yes the vehicle had standard repairs/maintenance done for a vehicle over 100k miles. Performed by "shade tree mechanics" with 70 years of auto restoration experience, but no advanced diagnostic equipment. We have replaced oxygen sensors, EGR valves, crankshaft sensors, and other items that require little more knowledge to replace than a headlight replacement.
When the PCM went out, it was easier to pay a shop to do it since we are in the middle of a major frame off restoration of a classic car which will value about $30,000 when fully painted.
Davis reported 1 broken wire that they taped, and that they traced the issue thru the Crank sensor to the PCM which they replaced (as this was the problem when the vehicle was dropped off)
9 miles later the vehicle would not start again due to the wire smashed against the sensor mount.
The very next week they refused to honor their 90 day warranty unless prohibitively expensive, and evidently unnecessary repairs, were paid for by an elderly couple.
They then demanded [redacted] and [redacted] remove the vehicle on the hottest day of the year.
The vehicle was immediately taken to an independent shop, that had no problem locating the obviously "smashed" wire (per their verbal communication). The repair was done, the vehicle has run fine in the weeks since with the factory installed wiring harness.
After conversing with others on the town FB site, others have reported similar instances from Davis, one being an air conditioner repair resulting in broken wires. I will urge them to file Revdex.com complaints as well if they have not already done so.
