DBD Remodeling Reviews (1)

Review: I have used this contractor before without problem. This time I engaged him to install a new kitchen floor. A few months before this project, when he was installing a backsplash for me, he gave me a quote of $700 for installation of the floor. He was to provide the trim, grout, and mortar and I would provide the tile. I told him that I wanted the existing flooring removed. When I contacted him in January 2015, I inquired about additional services, including painting and some additional trim work. I decided against those additional services because the cost of the tile was considerably more expensive than I thought it would be and he came back with a charge of $750 for the install plus I was to buy the trim and grout. Although the charge was more than originally quoted and I had a similar bid (copy of which I still have in my possession) from another contractor, I decided to stay with DBD because I had used them before. That was a big mistake. The quality of the current work is below substandard. The work was to take a few days but it extended into more than a week. Dirt and dust was everywhere. Several of the tiles did not adfix to the floor because, according to the owner, his helper didn't know how to use quick set mortar. Whenever the owner has done work for me in the past, he indicates that he has had to dismiss his previous workers because of their substandard work, or alleged drug related issues. The existing flooring was not removed per my understanding and he put cement board on top of the existing flooring, without my consent, which raised it so substantially that my back door will not completely open and the tile was placed to abut the door jamb instead of going underneath it. The floor is uneven throughout and "repairs" to it by DBD's helper have made the matter worse. Some of the tiles are so uneven that you trip over them. These were tiles that were replaced because of the incorrect handling of the mortar. Dave claims that the tiles were bowed, but I personally checked 4 boxes of tile where they were purchased and all were straight. And before the tiles were replaced, the floor in one problem area was relatively even. Trim was placed on top of existing trim rather than removing the old trim. Additionally the trim doesn't match up with the other rooms because of the increased height caused by failure to remove the existing flooring. They left a valve leaking underneath my sink after they disconnected the dishwasher. Dave, the owner, has made repeated promises, documented by text messages that I have in my possession., that he is going to repair the situation, but it has been over 3 months and I have no confidence in this contractor. During the 3 month period I have left repeated messages for him. The last time I heard from him was on March 16 saying that he lost all his contact information as a result of losing his previous phone (which he claims he could not call out on, but could only communicate via text messages).Desired Settlement: My floor is an absolute mess. I paid $495.32 for flooring that will need to be removed, in addition to over $100 for ancillliary materials in addition to the $750 paid to DBD for a substandard job. I will need to have the work redone and I have zero confidence in this contractor.
