DC Pups provided what may be my worst customer service experience. I purchased a puppy from them as a retirement gift for my parents and paid a $200 deposit, as well as a $50 hold fee because I couldn't pick him up for another week and a half as I would be on travel for work.
Right after I left, I spoke to my parents and they told me that they would be traveling out of the country for an extended period of time next month and when I mentioned the puppy they said it wasn't the right time, nor do they have the capacity to care for a puppy. I immediately called the Owner, Nate, which was less than an hour and a half after I purchased the puppy, well within their business hours (4:00pm). I figured although the deposit was non-refundable, given the circumstances, he would work with me to cancel the transaction since I literally just purchased the puppy-the bank hadn't even processed the payment yet. I tried multiple times that evening to reach him via phone and left messages, and sent an e-mail. No response. I called multiple times the first thing the next morning and didn't get a response and when I did reach him, he blew me off and said he was busy and would get back to me. He finally called me back hours later and said he wouldn't refund me my deposit, but would give me back my $50 hold fee. I told him I felt robbed because it wasn't like anyone missed an opportunity to purchase the puppy in the less than 24 hours that I made the purchase and I actually tried to reach him within an hour and a half after making the purchase. He said he'd consider refunding me the $200 once he sold the puppy.
I then spent a month e-mailing him and texting him about the refund at at one point he said he sold the puppy and that he'd refund me the entire $250. Trying to reach him was nearly impossible and when he actually responded he had excuses from "I'm swamped", "I was on vacation", and "I was moving". I finally received the check after a month of persistent follow-up and frustrating excuses and it was only for $50. I'm not sure if at any point he really considered refunding me the entire amount, but I feel like he kept putting me off hoping I'd give up and let it go.
I'm done expending my energy into this so he won in the end, but I do want potential customers to know this: 1) Don't expect good customer service here, and 2) The fact that he made $200 off of someone who, not even two hours, after the purchase realized the puppy wouldn't get the attention and care it should get is telling that he's more concerned about taking people's money than making sure a puppy goes to a loving and caring home. It was my fault for my hasty decision and putting a "non-refundable" deposit down, but it's frustrating that I lost a $200 deposit on a puppy I "reserved" for less than 24 hours that I never even took home and he ended up selling to someone else shortly after.
