DC Swim Week Reviews (%countItem)

I am a small online clothing boutique business owner and I participated in a vendor event with DC Swim Week. The entire experience was a scam. The event coordinator misrepresented the event, expected customer traffic, and entire set up. The event was cross promoted as a holiday bazaar and some sort of "***" event which we only learned of after the fact. Hardly no customers showed up at all and all the vendors were set up in separate rooms away from the music and general area. When we contacted the Executive Director after the event he was very defensive and blamed miscommunications on misinformed staff. I have done many events in DC with different degrees of success and exposure but only this one felt like a true scam.

The DC Swim event was held on Saturday, December 14th. The outcome of the event was poorly executed due to widespread inconsistencies, email mis-communications, and vendor access to the holiday bazaar.

Below are a some of the grievances against DC Swim event;

The event was marketed at least three different ways, as a party, a bazaar, and as a charitable event. This inconsistency did not provide the optimal attendance for shoppers to attend and prepare to shop. There was variability in the date and time of the event, as well.

Vendors were told, by a DC Swim event volunteer, that emails from "Chelsea B" were sent from an alias email account in an effort to manage email communications. We were pointedly told that "Chelsea B" did not exist! This was later refuted by the Event organizer. Either way, knowing this information generated a sense of falsification and negatively impacted the business relationship with the Event Planner.

The DC Swim event organizers did not deliver on the promise to draw a crowd between 300-500 potential shoppers. The lack in attendance was not solely dependent on weather, but mostly on the effectiveness of advertisement prior to the event, and the access to the event which was not clear but left vendors and shoppers confused about how and where to access the holiday bazaar.

The most egregious offense, was false advertisement on marketing material that stated 'discounted items from 50+ vendors"! I did not agree to this, nor would I have agreed to provide discounted items to an event in which I paid to vend. This was true mis-direction and a mis-representation of the holiday bazaar.

Overall, the above items, and others not mentioned, represent a breach of contract by the organizers of the DC Swim event. I held my end of the agreement: 1)pay the agreed upon vendor fee, 2) represent my own brand, and 3)adhere to the entry and set-up time. DC Swim vent did not adhere to their end of the agreement, therefore, I request a full refund of the vendor fee.

DC Swim Week is an online platform, you cannot find a physical address or phone # or contact info on them. They host sporadic events throughout DC in popup venues, the addresses change are different for their events. I have had friends that have participated in their events and gave me negative feedback on them. They target small DC makers/artists, small businesses via email to participate in the popup event at the cost of $159/160 to have a table at an event they're hosting. Yesterday the event was at *** NW at the Make Offices in Glover Park. There were roughly 60 or so vendors that attended. Many were dissatisfied and disgusted at the way the event had been portrayed and advertised. It was a strange mesh of young models in swimsuits walking through the booths and modeling makers clothing, jewelry followed by sleazy looking photographers and then club music and drinks, models on the other side of the venue. Vendors felt disconnected, many didn't really see the connection. It all felt quite seedy. I've attended many events and this was really disconcerting. Many DC businesses artists spent the whole day there from noon to 6 pm without making any sales, and the organizer, Moh D evasive to concerns of the vendors. There was a petition circulating by one of the vendors to request booth refunds. I think it warrants looking into. Many folks who had sat all day without sales or customers packed up and left realizing it was a sham. I do know some people made sales, but the ironic thing was there were none to very little shoppers at this event. Granted it rained, but it just seemed very underhanded.
