The business offered my wife free exam and then charged her fees without any warning. on 6/28 I took my wife to *** Eye center for a free lasik exam and consultation for cost. We were informed later that the lasik may not be the best way to go and another exam was scheduled on 8/17 for cataract consultation. Once we had all the information, we informed the center that we would let them know what we wanted to do. In September, we received a bill for both visits! We called the billing office and reiterated that we were promised that the consultation was free of charge. *** promised to look into the matter and call us back but never did! My wife called *** again on 11/8 and had another conversation about the free consultation and was told that once the initial visit was free but nothing was free after that date. When my wife began to tell her that at no time were we ever told that there was a point when the visit/consultation became a fee and that was misleading, *** hung up on my wife. My wife then called the billing company that sent the bills and the lady seemed surprised by the matter and said she would look into it and call us back. On 11/9, my wife received a call from Dr. and when my wife brought up the matter that at no time were we ever informed that the process was costing us and the "free" process was over and that this was misleading, Dr. angrily told my wife that she would remove the remaining fee and told my wife to have a good day and hung up! We are surprised at the lack of professionalism from the billing personnel and Dr. We were clearly misled about the process of the "free" exam/consultation and any ethical, honest, professional should have and would have notified us if and when the free process was over and fees would be applied! We are concerned that our credit has been damaged because of the past due bills and we feel it is totally fair for the business to reimburse us for the charges my wife paid under duress and threat of damage to our credit and that the charges be removed from our credit.

Desired Outcome

We are concerned that our credit has been damaged because of the past due bills and we feel it is totally fair for the business to reimburse us for the charges my wife paid under duress and threat of damage to our credit and that the charges be removed from our credit.

The patient was seen in our office 6/28/17 for a free lasik eval. Upon exam it was determined she had cataracts. She was told about the cataracts and would could proceed with the medical exam to be filed with her insurance. She wanted to proceed with the exam. She spoke to the doctor about her options and then the surgery coordinator. The details of surgery and cost were explained. She returned to the office on 8/17/17 for further testing. On 11/8/17 the patient called our billing person and was very rude and would not listen to what we were trying to explain. When the doctor was made aware of this, she felt like the patient just didn't understand so she called the patient. Again the patient would not listen to the doctor and was making rude remarks about her and the office. The doctor finally said we will remove charges and for her to have a nice day. Our billing company called the patient and advised she owed us nothing. Nothing was ever turned in on the patient concerning her credit. No insurance was filed and she only received 1 statement after which the doctor said to remove all charges. We never like to have miscommunication with patient and on her visit she seemed to understand the information given to her. The doctor would have liked to have answered questions for her but she was not given the opportunity to speak. The conversation ended with the doctor saying no charges have a nice day. I am sorry for the delay in answering, I did not see the first letter. Thank you for your time.

Customer Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The explanation is exactly the opposite because the rudeness was on behalf of Dr. and the person who sent the bills and would not allow my wife to explain her understanding of the situation. She stated that the insurance would be filed for the exams and it was made clear from the beginning that she was self-pay and had no insurance. She also states that the bills were withdrawn and charges dropped but we were made to pay one of the bills over the phone with the threat that is was past due. I am surprised at the dishonesty, the lack of professionalism and the trickery involved in all of this. If they simply had made us aware of the fact that the free exam had ended at any given point and made us aware that anything further would be a fee, this would all have been avoided. Instead, they chose not to disclose this in obvious hopes of getting a fee for their services that had been advertised as free! I would like to have the amount we paid returned and the whole matter would be solved!
